This study aims to investigate the effect of environmental, social and governance (ESG) on corporate performance, exploring the moderating role of balanced ESG management strategy. This study uses a panel model consisting of variables representing the ESG scores, firm-specific advantages and a interaction of balanced ESG management. The results show that governance is particularly negative on corporate performance. Besides, environmental and social activities are no correlation between Tobin’s Q and financial performance. In Korea, ESG management can be evaluated as a factor that corporate financial performance is still incurring opportunity costs rather than investment benefits. However it was possible to confirm the positive moderating effect of ESG on the relationship between balanced ESG management and financial performance. It was found that high balanced ESG management strategies has a stronger positive effect on corporate performance than low group balanced. The nature of a balanced ESG management strategy can control the optimization of operational mechanisms by considering the interrelationships among ESG activities. Therefore, balanced ESG management was analyzed as strategy that helps improve performance by promoting harmonized operational activities.

본 연구는 ESG 경영 활동과 기업성과 관계에 있어 균형적 ESG 경영전략이 상호작용 조절 관계를 통해 긍정적 영향을 미치는지 검 증해 본다. 이에 대한 대답을 찾기 위해 본 연구는 ESG 항목과 일련의 재무 속성, 그리고 균형적 ESG 경영전략의 상호작용을 나타내 는 변수로 구성된 패널 모형을 실증 분석하였다. 재무성과와 ESG 활동 간에 직접 효과를 분석한 결과에서는 지배구조의 경우 유의한 부정적(-) 관계가 관찰되었으며, 환경과 사회 활동에서는 유의한 관계가 없는 것으로 확인되었다. 국내 기업의 ESG 경영은 투자에 대 한 편익보다는 여전히 기회비용을 발생시킴으로써 기업 재무성과를 저해하는 요인으로 평가할 수 있다. 하지만 환경, 사회, 지배구조 활동이 균형적 ESG 경영전략과 상호교차 분석을 포함하였을 때 재무성과에 유의한 긍정적(＋) 관계로 조절되었다. 즉, 균형적 ESG 경 영전략을 잘 수행하는 기업이 균형적 ESG 지수가 낮은 집단보다 기업성과에 강한 긍정 효과를 발휘하는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 균 형적 ESG 경영전략이 가진 성격은 ESG 활동 간의 상호관계를 고려함으로써 운영 메커니즘의 최적화 작업을 조절하여 성과를 향상하 는 데 도움을 주는 전략적 활동으로 분석되었다.
