This study examines the Japanese performing groups’ activities in concurrence with the expansion of the Japanese imperial power, and their role in imperialism, focusing on Joseon and Taiwan in 1910. The activities of Japanese performing organizations in the colonies have been identified through various studies. Researchers in the history of performing arts have also recently drawn attention to the magic troupe Tenkatsu’s (天勝) group, which was noted in this paper. However, the trajectory of the Tenkatsu group indicates that they did not just secure and earn profits in the performance market, but also moved at the forefront of Japanese imperialist propaganda. Their performances were also considered “modern” and “educational,” and were on a roll. The fact that the organizations under the Governor-General of the colonies invited Tenkatsu’s group, and constantly reported and packaged their activities clearly shows that Tenkatsu’s group’s performance was not just due to its popularity. Japanese female magician Tenkatsu had performed not only in Joseon but also in Taiwan and Manchuria, and their activities were at the forefront of colonial cultural policies. In this paper, we follow the performances and activities of a representative performing organization in modern Japan called the Tenkatsu Party, focusing on their activities and the expansion process of colonial imperialism.

본고는 일본 제국주의의 식민지화가 본격적으로 진행된 1910년의 조선ㆍ대만을 중심으로, 일본의 마술단 천승(天勝)일행의 행적을 통해 당시 제국주의 세력의 확장에 발맞춰 이동했던 일본 공연단체의 활동양상과 제국주의 내에서 그들이 담당한 역할에 대해 고찰한 연구이다. 일본 공연단체의 식민지 내 활동은 그간 여러 연구를 통해 규명되어 오고 있다. 본고에서 주목한 마술단 천승 일행에 대해서도 최근 공연사 연구자들의 관심을 받고 있다. 그런데 천승 일행의 궤적을 살펴보다 보면 이들이 단순히 공연시장의 확보와 수익을 올리는 것에 머물지 않고, 일본 제국주의 선전의 최선봉에 서서 움직였다는 점을 알 수 있다. 이들이 연행한 공연물은 ‘근대적’이고 ‘교육적’이라는 평가를 얻으며 승승장구했다는 사실도 접할 수 있다. 천승 일행을 초청한 곳이 식민지 총독부 산하기관이며, 이들의 활동을 연일 기사로 보도하고 포장한 곳도 총독부 산하 기관지들이었다는 점은 천승 일행의 활약이 그저 인기에 힘입은 것만이 아니라는 점을 여실히 보여주고 있다. 일본의 여류마술사 천승은 조선뿐만 아니라, 대만ㆍ만주 등에서도 공연을 벌인 바 있으며, 그들의 활동은 식민주의 문화정책에 제일 앞줄에 서 있는 존재이기도 하다. 본고에서는 천승 일행이라는 근대일본의 대표적 공연단체의 공연활동과 행적을 따라가면서 이들의 활동과 식민 제국주의의 확장과정에 주목해 보았다.
