The purpose of this study is to examine the inclusion of disabilities whose importance has recently been recognized along with diversity issues in the fashion industry. Drawing on theoretical researches on disability studies, we analyzed the recent movement for changes in perception of disability in Instagram followed by the inclusion of the disabled in the fashion industry. As for the research method, text mining along with Instagram archive and related article analyses was performed combined with literature research. In this study, the case of Madeleine Stewart, the first Down syndrome model, was intensively analyzed. The research results are as follows: First, Madeleine Stewart shared hashtags such as 'diversity' and 'inclusion', which mean acceptance of disabilities, through her Instagram account to promote changes in the perception of people with disabilities; Second, Madeleine Stewart shared the process of overcoming the limitations of Down syndrome and becoming a fashion model through appearance management in an effort to deliver hopeful messages not only to the disabled but also to the general public without disabilities; Third, Madeleine Stewart was highly recognized not only in fashion but also in society as a whole and Stuart exerted her influence as an activist and influencer representing those with Down syndrome. This research analyzed Down syndrome model Madeleine Stewart's efforts to improve awareness on disability, which began in 2015 through Instagram, to help understand the development and flow of movements to embrace people with disabilities through fashion and social media.

본 연구는 최근 패션산업에서 다양성 이슈와 함께 중요하게 인식되고 있는 장애의 포용에 대해 고찰하는 것을 목적으로 하여, 이를 위해 장애학 연구를 바탕으로 패션산업의 장애인 포용에 대한 고찰과 함께 최근 인스타그램에 나타나는 장애의 인식변화를 위한 움직임을 분석하였다. 연구방법은 문헌연구와 빅데이터 연 구방법인 텍스트마이닝, 그리고 인스타그램 아카이브 분석과 관련 기사 분석을 병행했다. 본 연구에서는 최 초의 다운증후군 모델 매들린 스튜어트의 사례를 집중적으로 분석하였는데, 그 연구결과는 다음과 같다. 첫 째, 매들린 스튜어트는 자신의 인스타그램 계정을 통하여 장애의 포용을 의미하는 ‘diversity’, ‘inclusion’, 등의 해시태그를 공유하여 장애인 인식변화를 도모하였다. 둘째, 다운증후군 모델 매들린 스튜어트는 외양 꾸미기 를 통해 다운증후군의 한계를 극복하고 패션모델이 되어가는 과정을 공유하였다. 이러한 매들린 스튜어트의 인스타그램을 통한 장애인 포용을 위한 노력은 장애인뿐만 아니라 장애가 없는 일반인에게도 희망적 메시지 를 전달하였다. 셋째, 최초의 다운증후군 모델로서 주류 패션뿐만 아니라 뉴스와 신문 등에서 매들린 스튜어 트를 주목했으며, 스튜어트는 다운증후군을 대표하는 액티비스트이자 인플루언서로서 그 영향력을 발휘하였 다. 본 고는 인스타그램을 통해 2015년부터 시작된 다운증후군 모델 매들린 스튜어트의 장애 인식개선을 위 한 노력을 분석함으로써, 소셜미디어를 통해 전개되고 있는 장애인 포용을 위한 노력의 전개 양상과 흐름을 이해하는 데 도움이 되며 최근 패션산업과 사회 전반에서 중요하게 인식되고 있는 장애인의 포용에 대하여 이해할 수 있는 자료가 될 것이다.
