『Natya Shastra』 is the origin of every Indian dance style, and the oldest dance, Bharatanatyam which has been handed down in Tamil Nadu, South India, is the prototype of it. This study examines the origins of Indian dances in cultural, social, and religious aspects and investigates to understand the kind of dance transmitted to Devadasi. Also it attempts to find the spirits implied in Indian dances as well as the reason why Indian culture should deal with mythic subject matters. As a result, it can be found that the myth-related origins of Indian dances have made many gestures, mythological symbolic representation systems so as to express them within the religious boundaries.
