This study employs a narrative approach to examine the ‘dwelling’ of nurses who were dispatched to Germany. For this purpose, the data was collected from three nurses who have lived in Germany over 40 years. The collected data was analyzed through narrative inquiry based on Bollnow’s “Dwelling” (2004). The results of the study are presented as followed. First, the discriminatory attitudes and prejudices of the host society have hindered the creation of a comfortable environment for the immigrants. Secondly, the study participants were able to create a sense of tranquility by enduring various challenges in life, developing their personal attributes, and engaging in self-reflection. Thirdly, the participants in this study expanded their self-understanding as they navigated the challenges of life. At the same time, they continued their journey of self-discovery from the “distant place.”

본 연구는 파독간호사의 ‘거주함’에 관한 내러티브 연구이다. 이를 위해 독일에서 40 년 이상 거주하고 있는 파독간호사 3명을 연구참여자로 하여 자료를 수집하였다. 수집 된 자료는 볼노(Bollnow, 2004)의 ‘거주함’에 기초하여 내러티브 탐구로 분석하였다. 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 첫째, 이주국 사회 구성원들의 차별과 편견의 시선은 이주자 들이 형성하려는 안락한 공간의 형성에 위축을 가져왔다. 듈째, 연구참여자들은 삶의 여러 가지 역경에 인내하고 성품을 가다듬으며 스스로를 성찰하는 방법으로 평온함의 공간을 형성했다. 셋째, 연구참여자들은 삶의 역경을 거치면서 자신에 관한 이해를 넓 혔으며, 동시에 ‘먼 곳’에서 자기 자신에게로 나아가는 여정을 계속한다.
