This study aims to review the major research on classical poetry and popular songs and explore significant points of contention and productive directions in the discourse that can be identified through this process. The intersection between classical poetry from the past, where the attributes of poetry and song coexisted, and modern-day popular songs lies in the fact that they are “songs in mother tongue.” Despite the tremendous differences in era and media environment, the awareness that we can obtain by paying attention to this point of contact is not insignificant. When we focus on the attributes of songs reflected in classical poetry works, we can explore the vitality and cultural usefulness found in the intrinsic artistry of native language songs and the continuity problem. Furthermore, there has been progress in scholarly discussions of the literary and artistic aspects of Korean popular songs, from 1920s songs to K-pop, which has recently gained global popularity. It is, therefore, an opportune time for more active discussions in the Korean literary community. As a result of reviewing the research, it was revealed that the literature of poetry at the beginning of the 20th century has been deeply analyzed by scholars in various fields such as modern poetry, classical poetry, and musicology. In particular, it has been argued in many ways that traditional poetry and literature functioned as a significant "semantic body" rather than being discontinued or extinct, and the intersection between classical poetry and popular songs in the early 20th century had a very broad range. It has been proven that there are many cases where materials categorized as classical poetry, popular songs, or modern poetry have crossed the open boundaries and have been enjoyed as “songs.” Therefore, the 1920s can be seen as a period in which poetry and song were separated academically, and it is necessary for future researchers to find parts that can reconnect or may already be connected between poetry and song. Through this process, it has been confirmed that a perspective based on a perspectival vision that enables productive problem consciousness is required rather than focusing on the phenomenological similarity between classical poetry and popular songs. In particular, media that enjoy Korean popular songs have grown from the golden age of records to today's web platforms, becoming a song culture that communicates globally beyond the nation. Therefore, if we consider the question of whether the current academic segmentation units of classical poetry and popular songs will continue in the next 50 or 100 years, there is a need for research beyond the boundaries in various ways on both topics

본 연구는 고전시가와 대중가요에 대한 그간의 주요 연구사를 검토하고 이 과정 에서 확인할 수 있는 유의미한 쟁점이나 생산적 담론의 방향성을 탐색해 보고자 한 것이다. 기본적으로 시와 노래의 속성이 공존해있던 과거의 고전시가와 오늘날 대 중가요의 접점은 ‘우리말로 된 노래’라는 점에 있다. 시대와 매체 환경의 엄청난 이 질성에도 불구하고 ‘모국어 노래’라는 접점에 유의함으로써 우리가 확보할 수 있는 문제 의식은 적지 않다. 고전시가 작품들에 반영된 노래의 속성에 주목했을 때 확 인되는 생명력과 문화적 효용성은 모국어 노래가 지닌 근원적 예술성, 연속성의 문 제에 대한 고찰을 가능케 한다. 또한 1920년대 가요에서부터 근래 세계적 인기를 누리고 있는 케이팝에 이르기까지 한국 대중가요의 문학성과 예술성에 대한 학술 적 논의도 진전되고 있는 상황이라 국문학계에서도 보다 적극적인 논의가 필요한 시점이 된 것으로 보인다. 연구사를 검토한 결과 20세기초 시가 문학은 오늘날 현대시, 고전시가, 음악학 등으로 분절된 학문 영역의 학자들에 의해 깊이 있게 분석되었음을 알 수 있었다. 특히 전통 시가 문학이 단절되거나 소멸된 것이 아닌 유의미한 ‘의미체’로 기능했음 이 다양한 방식으로 논증되고 있어 20세기 초반의 고전시가와 대중가요는 교집합 의 범위가 매우 넓었음을 확인해 볼 수 있었다. 오늘날 고전시가와 대중가요, 근현 대시로 구획된 성격의 자료들이 열린 경계를 넘나들며 ‘노래’로 향유된 사례가 많았 음이 논증되고 있는 것이다. 그러므로 1920년대는 학문적으로 시와 노래가 결별한 시기로 볼 수 있으며 다시 시와 노래가 만날 수 있도록 혹은 이미 접속해 있을 수도 있는 부분들을 앞으로 연구자들이 찾아가야 할 것으로 보인다. 그리고 이 과정에서 고전시가와 대중가요 의 현상적 유사성보다는 생산적인 문제 의식을 가능하게 하는 원근법적 시각에서 의 고찰이 요구됨을 확인해 보았다. 특히 한국의 대중가요를 향유하는 매체는 유성 기 음반에서 출발하여 오늘날 웹플랫폼에 이르면서 국내를 넘어 전세계적으로 소 통되는 노래 문화로 성장하였다. 그러므로 향후 50년, 100년 후에도 현재 고전시가 와 대중가요에 대한 학문적 분절 단위가 지속될 수 있을까의 문제를 생각한다면 양 자에 대한 연구가 경계를 넘어 다양한 방식으로 고찰될 필요가 있어 보인다.
