This study investigates the roles and functions of dance in movies. The study examines what expressions are made through dance motions in movies by figuring out the development of The Film Rumba through the dance narrative. In Rumba, dance is its main form of communication. It is difficult to understand the story without understanding its dance. The movie offers extremely controlled expressions with a limited number of lines. Its narrative is led by the gestures and dances of characters. These are the reasons why this movie was chosen for this research. Dance has appeared in movies since movies were created, making them part of their history. Even early silent movies used dance for expressions, and such movies have continued to be produced until today. Most musical and dance movies present dance as a spectacle and focus on the visual elements of the scenes. Rumba develops its dramatic narrative with gestures and movement in addition to the aesthetic functions of dance. Exaggerated gestures and dances opposite to extremely controlled lines maximize persuasive power, which resembles the silent movie format. The role playing methods during the silent movie era were affected by Delsarte, who boldly expressed human emotions and spirits. This study analyzed the ways in which the narrative of drama was formed, in which dance language entered the movie narrative and audience, and in which way this was revealed in the dances of characters through Delsarte's role playing method. In the dance scenes in a movie, the audience can further add imagination and immersion in addition to lines and images through dance and take interest in appreciating the movie by interpreting the messages intended by the director at multiple angles. They can also feel the psychology of characters and get touched more than words can express by following the dance narrative. By analyzing the narratives of certain scenes in Rumba, the study basically examines the gestures in movies and analyzes the interpretations and functions of dance in movies.

본 연구는 영화 속 몸짓인 춤의 역할과 기능을 고찰하는데 목적을 둔다. 영화<룸바(Rumba)>의 춤의 내러티브(narrative)를 통해 서사의 전개를 파악하여 춤의 몸짓이 영화 속 어떠한 표현을 하고 있는가를 연구한다. 영화 <룸바>는 춤이 영화의 중요한 소재가 되기도 하며 춤을 빼놓고는 영화의 이야기를 이해 하기 어렵다. 극도의 절제된 표현으로 대사가 많지 않고 인물의 몸짓과 춤으로 극의 서사를 이끌어가고 있다는 점에서 연구 대상으로 선정한다. 영화 속 춤은 영화가 탄생한 순간부터 그 역사를 함께 하여 영 화에 등장하기 시작한다. 초기 무성영화 시대부터 이어진 영화 속 춤의 표현으로 나타나는 작품들은 현 재까지 이어지고 있다. 대부분의 뮤지컬영화나 댄스 영화의 경우 춤이 스펙터클이 되어 그 장면의 시각 적 요소를 중점적으로 다루었지만, 이 작품은 미학적 기능뿐 아니라 몸짓과 춤으로 극의 내러티브를 이 끌고 있다. 극도의 절제된 대사에 반해 과장된 몸짓과 춤으로 설득력이 극대화 되어 있는 지점이 무성영 화의 형태와 많이 닮아있다. 무성영화 시대의 연기법은 인간의 감정과 정신을 대담하게 표현하는 델사르 트(Francois Delsarte)의 영향을 받았다. 영화 속 춤의 언어가 영화의 서사속으로 그리고 관객안으로 들어 오는 극의 내러티브 형성은 등장인물의 춤에서 어떻게 드러나는지에 관해 델사르트의 연기법을 통해 분 석한다. 영화에 춤 장면이 나오면 관객은 춤을 통해 대사나 이미지 이상의 상상력과 몰입을 더할 수 있 으며 감독이 의도한 메시지를 다각적으로 해석함으로써 작품 감상에 흥미를 얻을 수 있다. 또한, 춤의 내 러티브를 따라가며 인물의 심리를 느끼고 말로 표현하지 못한 배가의 감동을 받을 수 있다. 본 고에서는 <룸바>의 특정장면들의 내러티브를 분석하여 영화 속 몸짓의 기본적 고찰과 함께 영화 속 춤에 관한 해 석과 기능을 분석하고 연구한다.
