Human Sheep is a short story published in the February 1958 issue of Shinchosha Publishing in Kenzaburo Oe's early years, in which he garnered attention in the literary community and wrote prolifically. This paper examines Japan in the state of colonial dependence, discusses Japan's mixed feelings about the US in the post-war period, and analyzes the image of the “teacher” character. Then, this author sought to read Human Sheep from a new point of view by exploring the “post-war” world depicted by the novel. The following summary provides an overview of the results of this study: To begin with, while many previous studies identified the setting of Human Sheep as the period of the military occupation of Japan by the US, its setting is considered to be a world mixed with the occupation period and the post-war period. Next, Human Sheep has no proper noun which specifically identifies someone but ambiguously features only improper nouns which cannot precisely identify someone, such as teacher, office worker, road construction worker, I, foreign soldier, woman, driver, and conductor. These improper nouns lend themselves to the interpretation that anyone would behave like them under such a given situation. Finally, Human Sheep is arguably one of the literary works that best represent the gap between Kenzaburo Oe's criticism and his fiction.

「인간의 양」은 1958년 2월 『신초』에 발표된 소설로 오에 겐자부로가 문단의 주 목을 받으며 왕성하게 작품 활동을 하던 초기 시절의 단편에 해당한다. 본 논문에서는 먼저 식민지적 종속 상태의 일본에 대해 살펴보고, 전후 일본의 미국에 대한 양가적 감정에 대해 고찰한 다음, ‘교원’이라는 인물의 이미지를 분석 하였다. 그리고 「인간의 양」이 그려내고 있는 ‘전후’는 무엇일까를 살펴봄으로써 「인간의 양」의 새로운 읽기를 시도하였다. 이를 통해 확인한 것을 정리하면 다음과 같다. 먼저 많은 선행연구에서는 「인간의 양」의 배경을 대부분 점령기로 파악하고 있 으나 「인간의 양」의 배경은 점령기와 전후를 섞어 놓은 세계라 할 수 있을 것이다. 다음으로는 「인간의 양」에서 대상을 완전하게 특정할 수 있는 고유명사는 나오 지 않고, 교원, 회사원, 도로공사장 인부, 나, 외국인 병사, 여성, 운전수, 차장 등 정확하게 확정할 수 없는 명사로만 모호하게 표현되어 있다는 점이다. 이는 주어 진 상황 하에서는 누구든 이러한 행동을 할 수밖에 없다는 이야기라고 해석할 수 있다. 마지막으로 「인간의 양」은 오에의 평론과 소설의 간극을 가장 잘 보여주는 작 품 중 하나로 평가할 수 있을 것이다.
