This study attempted to examine the degree and effect of probability of transformation in fiction through a comparative analysis of two distinctly different texts from the East and the West. The aspects of transformation appeared in Trnasformation of Kafka and Dawn Journey of Choi Sang-gyu. This article has established a base of distinction as probability and has drawn out three points that determine probability of transformation in the fiction; the two parameters―transformation time and transformation degree and a constant―transformation cognition. The transformation in Transformation is crude, sudden and non-probable. Therefore, Transformation has little reality and verisimilitude, but has ultimate effect through transformation. Irrational transformation from human to a big insect makes us think specially about human existence. On the other hand, the transformation in Dawn Journey is natural, gradual and probable. As a result, reality and verisimilitude are maintained all around Dawn Journey. And Dawn Journey foreground the likely events in the modern real world. Dawn Journey with full probability leads readers to a in-depth thinking place. In case of using transformation motif in fiction, we can frame the poetics of transformation probability, through analyzing and generalizing all factors that characterize a degree of probability. This new poetics should provide a useful tool that analyzes special and unique aesthetics of each fiction.

본고는 소설 속 변신의 양상이 극단적 대척점에 있는 동서양의 두 텍스트 비교 분석을 통해 변신 개연성의 정도에 따른 소설적 특질과 성취의 대조를 꾀하였다. 카프카의 <변신>과 최상규의 <새벽기행>은 변신을 다른 방법으로 표방하고 있는 바, 그 대별 기준점을 ‘개연성’으로 설정하고 변신 개연성을 결정짓는 요 인 세 가지를 추출하였다. 변신 개연성의 변수 두 가지-변신 시간, 변신 강도- 와 상수 한 가지-변신 인지-를 두 텍스트에 적용해 분석한 결과, 카프카 <변신>은 ‘생경스럽고 급작스러우며 개연성이 적은 변신’으로 정리할 수 있다. 그래서 <변신>은 리얼리티 혹은 핍진성이 약화되고 변신이 유발시키는 극단적 효과에 치중하게 된다. 인간에서 커다란 곤충으로의 비합리적인 변신을 독자들이 납득 하도록 강요하는 무리수를 두지만, 그만큼 인간 실존에 대한 특단의 회의로 이 끄는 힘이 생성된다. 최상규의 <새벽기행>은 ‘자연스럽고 점진적이며 개연성 있는 변신’으로 정리할 수 있다. 그래서 <새벽기행>은 리얼리티 혹은 핍진성이 시종 유지되고 현대 현실세계에서 충분히 일어날 법한 사건을 전경화한다. 독자 들을 작중인물과 동일시하게 유도하는 힘이 강하여 독자로 하여금 깊은 사유로 이끈다. 소설에서 변신 모티프를 활용할 경우, 그 개연성의 정도를 특징짓게 하는 제 요소들의 양상을 분석-종합하여 소설 속 변신 개연성의 시학을 구성할 수 있다. 이는 개별 소설 고유의 미학을 분석해 내는 데 유용한 방편이 된다.
