Scientific perspectivism, as proposed by Giere and Massimi, is the view that scientific knowledge is situated and formed within historical and/or cultural perspectives. Both of them claim that their perspectivism is a form of scientific realism. Contrary to their claims, I argue that their perspectivism does not meet some requirements of realism and therefore cannot be understood as scientific realism. First, Giere's perspectivism implies alethic relativism, which is incompatible with the epistemic requirement of scientific realism. Next, Massimi's perspectivism does not imply alethic relativism, but it still leaves some unsolved problems related to scientific realism. In particular, her phenomena ontology i s tangential to the main i s s ues of the scientific realism debate. In conclusion, under the current framework of the realism debate, it is difficult to understand Giere and Massimi’s perspectivism as scientific realism.
