To achieve maritime peace on the Korean peninsula, it is necessary to ensure maritime
security and to do so, the development of the intelligence function of the Korea Coast Guard is
crucial. This paper presents future development tasks based on the evaluation of the intelligence
function of the Korea Coast Guard. Changes in the maritime security environment are manifested
by the competition for maritime hegemony and strengthened intelligence capabilities among
neighboring countries on the Korean peninsula, the emerging security threats and changes in
intelligence paradigm, North Korea's military provocations, and increased demand for maritime
intelligence against North Korea. The evaluation of the function of the Korea Coast Guard was
focused on the pursuit of a balanced intelligence paradigm of security and safety intelligence, the
establishment of an international intelligence agency, and the activation of the intelligence
function of the Korea Coast Guard. The proposed tasks for the future development of the
intelligence function of the Korea Coast Guard include strengthening intelligence collection and
analysis capabilities, expanding intelligence infrastructure, establishing domestic and international
maritime intelligence sharing and cooperation systems, enhancing security intelligence functions
in response to increasing demand for North Korean intelligence, avoiding politicization of
intelligence, and strengthening intelligence control.

한반도 해양 평화를 위해서는 해양 안보의 확보가 필요하며 이를 위해서는 해양경찰의 정보기능 발전이 이루어져야 한다. 본 논문은 이러한 점에 주목하여 해양경찰의 정보기능에 대한 평가를 토대로 향후 발전 과 제를 제시하였다. 해양 안보 환경의 변화는 한반도 주변국의 해양 패권 경쟁과 정보기능 강화, 신흥안보 위협 의 등장과 정보 패러다임의 변화, 북한의 무력도발과 대북 해양정보의 수요 증가로 나타나고 있다. 해양경찰 의 정보기능 특징 및 평가는 치안·안보 정보의 균형적 정보 패러다임 추구와 국제정보국의 출범 및 해양경찰 의 정보기능 활성화를 중심으로 분석하였다. 향후 해양경찰의 정보기능 발전을 위한 과제로는 정보 수집·분 석 능력의 강화와 정보 인프라 확충, 국내외 해양정보 공유･협력 체제 구축, 대북 정보 수요 증가와 보안정보 기능의 강화, 정보의 정치화 지양(止揚)과 정보통제 강화를 제시하였다.
