Along with the globalization of Korean culture, the interest in Korean food has also expanded. In Berlin, Germany, there has been a rapid expansion in the number of Korean restaurants and along with it a rising demand and consumer base for Korean food. This study explores how overseas Korean restaurants, which were considered a product of globalization, experienced being at home during the COVID-19 crisis. This article discusses the impact of the government mandated response to the COVID crisis on Korean food entrepreneurs. The temporary experience of immobility in a globalized society damaged the restaurant management of Korean immigrants who depended on their transnational networks. Above all, the economic damage caused by business restrictions was the most severe. Restaurant operators were overcoming economic damage through coping strategies such as reducing manpower, changing and simplifying menus, and linking delivery services. They also strengthened their solidarity with the local community. In conclusion, in times of limited mobility such as COVID-19, ethnic restaurants have resulted in more reliance and concentration on community networks than on cross-border networks.

한식의 세계화 바람과 함께 독일 베를린에 있는 한국 음식점 수는 지난 10년 사이에 급속도로 증가했다. 특히 독일 내 한국 문화에 대한 관심이 늘면서 한국 음식 수요와 소비자 수도 증가하였다. 본 연구는 글로벌화의 산물처럼 여겨지던 해외의 한국 음식점이 코로나19와 같이 물리적 이동성(physical mobility)이 제한된 시기를 어떻게 경험하였는지에 관해 탐구한다. 인류학적 현장 연구를 통해 수집된 자료를 분석하여 베를린에 있는 한국 음식점 10곳이 경험한 코로나19 위기와 극복 전략에 관해 토론한다. 세계화가 진행된 사회에서 한시적으로 경험된 부동성(不動性, immobility)은 국제적 연결망에 의존하던 한국 이민자의 음식점 운영에 피해를 주기도 하였지만 그들의 초국적 자본이 위기를 극복할 방안을 마련해 주기도 하였다. 음식점 운영자들은 인력 감축, 메뉴 변경및 간소화, 배달 서비스 연계 등의 전략을 통해 경제적 피해를 극복할 뿐 아니라 지역사회와 연대도 강화하고 있었다. 이러한 극복 전략은 여타 음식점과 비슷하게 조사되었지만, 이민 기업가가 갖는 초국적 자본에 의한 차별점 또한 발견되었다.
