This article examines the relationship between conflict and authority in the Middle Ages by exploring how Lanfranc of Canterbury(c.1010-1089) settled and managed conflicts in the English Church during his career as Archbishop of Canterbury in the 11th century and how his authority was established or altered through these processes. In particular, this article focuses on Lanfranc's conflicts with Thomas of York and other bishops over preserving Canterbury's primacy in England and his efforts to establish and strengthen his authority as Archbishop of Canterbury. However, with support from William the Conqueror, Lanfranc was able to resolve conflicts in the English Church and increase his authority. At the same time, William’s royal authority was supported by Lanfranc’s decision on legitimizing the deposing of rebellious bishops and abbots in the English Church through church councils in England. This demonstrates that not only Lanfranc and William recognized and supported each other’s authority in England, but also Lanfranc had a somewhat subordinate relationship with William the Conqueror, who had the authority to resolve conflicts within the English Church.
