This study explored the identity of Korean language teachers dispatched abroad, especially focusing on the contradictory situation between cosmopolitan subjects who carry out transnational migration and those who play the role of advocates of Korean culture by seeking to expand and revive nationalism. This paper tried to analyze how the two interact to form a multi-layered identity, with the desire of transnational movement, practice of living abroad in an elite position, and the mission given under the clear purpose of expanding Korea's influence and enhancing its status. This study used the oral life history research method on Korean language teachers who are currently dispatched abroad or have recently experienced dispatch. Those who have chosen to leave Korea and migrate abroad are using their Korean language teacher qualifications as cultural asset to continue this transnational mobility. In order to maintain the cosmopolitan subject of transnational movement, they are in an ironic situation of playing a role to enhance Korea's national brand, strengthen nationalism, and expand its profits. Although they voluntarily left the border of Korea, they can actually be seen as tightly bound under the influence of Korea. This is intertwined with an increase in transnational mobility, but unfaltering nationalism, linguistic imperialism, and strategies for maintaining and raising individual social status. This study aimed to examine how Korean language teachers abroad position themselves in the contradictory multi-layered situation and how they form and re-form their identities based on conflicting elements. This study is meaningful in that it reads the reality in which these transnational subjects naturally practice nationalism or linguistic imperialism tendencies from a sociocultural point of view, and examines their constantly (re)constructed identity.

본 연구는 해외 파견 한국어교원의 정체성을 탐색하되, 특히, 초국가적 이주를 감 행하는 코즈모폴리턴적 성격을 가진 주체와 국가주의의 확장과 부흥을 꾀하는 한류/ 한국문화 전도사의 역할을 수행하는 주체 사이의 모순적 상황에 주목한다. 전문인력, 즉, 엘리트적 지위에서 초국가적 이동과 해외 생활 실천이라는 열망과 한국의 영향력 확대와 지위 제고라는 분명한 목적성 아래 부여받은 사명, 이 둘 사이가 어떻게 복합 적으로 연결되고 혼재되어 중층적인 정체성을 형성하고 있는지 분석해보고자 했다. 이를 위해 본 연구는 현재 해외에 파견되어 있거나 근래에 파견을 경험한 한국어교원 들을 대상으로 구술생애사 연구 방법을 사용하였다. 이들은 초국가적 이동성을 지속 하기 위한 문화자본으로 한국어교원 자격증을 활용하고 있다. 또한 세계시민이라는 코즈모폴리턴 주체를 유지하기 위해 한국의 국가 브랜드를 향상하고 국가주의 강화와 이익을 확대하기 위한 역할을 수행하는 아이러니한 상황에 처하게 되었다. 한국이라 는 국민국가의 국경을 자발적으로 벗어났지만, 스스로 벗어난 그 국가를 외국인에게 홍보하고 초청하는 역할 수행이 기대되는 업무를 하면서 실은 국가주의의 영향 아래 단단히 묶여 있다고도 볼 수 있다. 여기에는 전 지구적으로 초국가적 이동성의 증가, 그러나 결코 약화되지 않은 국가주의, 언어 제국주의적 상황 및 개인의 계급 유지 및 상승 전략 등이 맞물려 있다. 본 연구는 해외로 파견된 한국어교원이 자신이 처한 모 순된 중층적 상황 속에서 자신을 어떻게 위치시키고 있으며, 상충하는 요소를 바탕으 로 어떻게 정체성을 (재)형성하고 있는지 고찰하였다. 이를 위해 연구자는 점차 증가 하는 해외 파견 한국어교원을 초국가적 이동을 택하고 지속하고자 하는 행위 주체로 자리매김하는 작업이 선결되어야 함을 주장한다. 나아가 해외 파견 한국어교원이 국 민 국가주의나 서구 제국주의적 경향성 등을 자연스럽게 실행할 가능성이 있는 현실을 사회문화적인 관점에서 독해하고, 끊임없이 (재)구성되는 정체성을 살펴본다는 점에서 의의를 가진다.
