This study was conducted to explore how the social status that the instant message recipient usually perceives and the message reception situation affect the meaning of the smiley emoticon(^^) included in the instant message. Experiment 1 divided the participants into a group with a low perceived social status and a group with a high perceived social status through questionnaires. Then, the participants imagined when they were given an instant message with a smiley emoticon in a positive situation, such as achievement, or when they received the same message, in a negative situation, such as failure. Shortly thereafter, the participants were asked to judge whether the smiley emoticon included in the instant message had a positive meaning(smile) or a negative meaning(taunt). Accordingly, in Experiment 2, a group with low social status(imagine a person with a significantly higher social status than oneself) and a group with a high social status(imagine a person with a very low social status than oneself) were operated in the laboratory. Except for this, the rest of the procedure was the same as in Experiment 1. As a result, it could be confirmed that the group with low perceived social status tended to judge the meaning of smiley emoticon negatively (with ridicule and taunt) compared to the group with high perceived social status (Expt. 1 and Expt. 2). In addition, it was observed that the group with low perceived social status judged smiley emoticon received in positive situations somewhat negatively, while those with high perceived social status judged smiley emoticon received in negative situations somewhat positively(Expt. 1 and Expt. 2). This study is expected to have implications for situations in which online messages containing emoticons are sent to unspecified people and those who counsel or guide people of low social status.

본 연구는 문자 메시지에 포함된 웃음 이모티콘(^^)의 의미 판단에 있어 문자 수신자가 평소 지각하는 사 회적 지위와 문자 수신 상황이 어떻게 영향을 미치는지 확인하기 위해 이루어졌다. 이를 위한 실험 1은 설문문항 을 통해 지각된 사회적 지위 낮은 집단과 높은 집단을 구분한 후, 성취와 같은 긍정적 상황에서 웃음 이모티콘이 포함된 문자를 받았을 때 혹은 실패와 같은 부정적 상황에서 웃음 이모티콘이 포함된 문자를 받았을 때 문자에 포함된 웃음 이모티콘이 긍정적 의미인지(미소)아니면 부정적 의미인지(조소) 판단하게 하였다. 이어지는 실험 2는 실험 1에서 관찰한 결과의 인과성을 확인하기 위해 이루어졌고, 이에 따라 사회적 지위가 낮은 집단(자신보다 사 회적 지위가 월등히 높은 사람 상상)과 높은 집단(자신보다 사회적 지위가 매우 낮은 사람 상상)을 실험실에서 조 작한 후, 실험 1과 동일하게 웃음 이모티콘 의미 판단 과제를 진행하였다. 결과적으로 지각된 사회적 지위가 낮은 집단은 높은 집단에 비해 웃음 이모티콘의 의미를 부정적으로(조소와 조롱) 판단하는 경향이 있음을 확인할 수 있 었다(실험 1과 실험 2). 또한 지각된 사회적 지위가 낮은 집단은 긍정적 상황(성취)에서 받은 웃음 이모티콘도 다 소 부정적으로 판단하는 반면, 지각된 사회적 지위가 높은 잡단은 부정적 상황(실패)에서 받은 웃음 이모티콘도 다소 긍정적으로 판단하는 현상을 관찰하였다(실험 1과 실험 2). 본 연구는 불특정 다수에게 이모티콘이 포함된 온라인 메시지를 보내는 상황 및 낮은 사회적 지위의 사람을 상담하거나 지도하는 사람들에게 시사점을 줄 것으 로 보인다.
