During the Japanese colonial era, missionaries did not get involved in the politics of Japan and Joseon, observing the principle of separation of church and state according to the instructions of their mission department. It is well shown in the records of the 3.1 Movement by Preston and Bull that the same was true of the Presbyterian Church in the United States(PCUS), which was assigned the Honam region as a missionary field. However, missionaries of the PCUS criticized Japan's invasion of Joseon in the process of evangelizing until they were instructed not to intervene in Joseon's politics from the mission headquarters to which they belonged. In addition, missionaries witnessed and wrote the scene of Japanese violence against Koreans when the March 1st Movement occurred. And by informing acquaintances in their homeland of this fact, they spread to the world that an Independence Movement had occurred in Joseon, and that Japan had used violence in the process of suppressing the 3.1 Movement and the Movement against Shinto worship. This paper summarizes these contents to balance the perspective of missionaries' attitude toward the politically suffering Joseon people during the Japanese colonial period.

일제강점기에 선교사들은 자신의 소속 선교부의 지시에 따라 정교분리 원칙을 지키면서 일본과 조선의 정치에는 관여하지 않았다. 이것은 호남 지역을 선교지로 할당받았던 미국 남장로회도 마찬가지였다는 것이 프레 스톤과 불 등의 3.1운동에 관한 기록에 잘 나타나 있다. 하지만 미국 남장로회 선교사들은 자신들이 소속된 선교부로부터 조선 의 정치에 개입하지 말라는 지시를 받기 전까지 전도하는 과정에서 조선 인에게 일본의 조선 침략을 비판하기도 했다. 또한 선교사들은 3.1운동이 일어났을 때 일본인의 조선인에 대한 폭력 현장을 목도하고 기록으로 남 겼을 뿐만 아니라 자신의 고국에 있는 지인에게 알림으로써 조선에 독립 운동이 일어났으며, 그 운동을 일본이 진압하는 과정에서 폭력을 행사하 였음을 세계에 전파하는 역할을 했다. 본 논문은 이러한 내용을 정리하여 일제강점기에 정치적으로 고통 받는 조선인에 대한 선교사들의 태도에 대한 시각에 균형을 이루게 하였다.
