Prior researches on the General Sherman’s expedition to Pyongyang generally relied on documents produced by the Joseon government. However, these sources require thorough examination since its purpose naturally includes justifying the actions and perspectives of the Joseon government. This paper uses contemporary sources in addition to those produced by the Joseon government as important evidence. The crew of General Sherman thought that the Qing government’s demand to open the Korean ports would lead to transaction with them. Pyongyang‘s governor Park Kyu-soo initially considered opening ports but gradually became to take precautions, at which point the General Sherman crew sought to kidnap Lee Hyun-ik the district commander and take him hostage. As it happened, the government’s order of strong confrontation arrived, and Park Kyu-soo conducted a full-scaled attack which eventually led the ship to sink and the crew all executed. This paper concludes that the Joseon government was responsible for the sinking of the General Sherman.

지금까지 제너럴셔먼호 연구의 평양행 연구는 주로 조선정부 측의 기 록에 의존하였다. 하지만 이 자료는 조선의 입장을 변호하려는 입장에서 쓰인 것이므로 비판적으로 검토해야 한다. 본 연구는 당시 쓰인 조선정부 측의 기록이외의 다른 자료들을 중요하게 참고하였다. 제너럴셔먼호는 청의 조선에 대한 개방요구로 무역이 가능할 것이라고 생각하였다. 여기에 대하여 박규수는 처음에는 개방의 가능성을 생각했으 나 점점 제너럴셔먼호를 경계하기 시작하였고, 이런 상황에서 제너럴셔먼 호는 중군 이현익을 납치하여 인질로 삼으려 했다. 마침 정부에서 강경 대응책이 전달되자 박규수는 제너럴셔먼호를 집중 공격하였고, 결국 배는 침몰하고 승객은 모두 사살되었다. 본 논문은 지금까지 연구와는 달리 결 국 제너럴셔먼호 침몰에 대한 궁극적인 책임은 조선정부에 있다고 본다.
