In order to actively respond to the current problems of the region and have opportunities for development, consideration of the history and placeness of the region, the way of life of the residents, and analysis of the current conditions and future prospects are of paramount importance. Therefore, interest in regional studies is increasing not only in related academic and research groups, but also at the level of government and local governments. Moving away from the criticism of retrospective approach based on academism, the approach direction of regional research that should be pursued in the future should seek convergence among various fields such as history, geography, culture, and economy, and the participation and communication of local residents should be the basic premise. It should aim for ‘policy regional studies’ that actively responds to current issues. Through the case of Jeonju, this study defines the practical meaning of regional research at the present time as ‘3Rs’ such as Remembrance, Resilience, and Regeneration, and presents a virtuous circle relationship between regional policies and regional studies.

현재 지역이 처한 문제에 적극적으로 대응하고 발전의 기회를 가지고 위하여 지역의 역사와 장소성, 주민들의 삶에 방식에 대한 고찰, 현재 처한 여건과 미래전망에 대한 분석이 무엇보다 중요하다. 따라서 이에 관련 학계나 연구 집단은 물론 정부 및 지방자치단체 차원에서도 지역연구에 대한 관심이 높아지고 있다. 아카데미즘에 입각한 회고적 접근이라는 비판에서 벗어나 앞으로 지향해야할 지역연구의 접근방향은 역사·지리·문화·경제 등 다분야간의 융합을 꾀하고 지역주민의 참여와 소통이 기본 전제가 되어야 하며, 지역사회의 현안에 능동적으로 대응하는 ‘정책 지역연구’를 지향해야 할 것이다. 본 연구는 전주시의 사례를 통해 현 시점 지역연구의 실천적 의미를 기억(Remembrance), 회복(Resilience), 재생(Regeration) 등 ‘3R’로 규정하고 지역정책과 지역연구 간의 선순환 관계를 제시한다.
