The Autonomous Police System was implemented in earnest from July 1, 2021, entering the third year of implementation. This can be said to be the result of efforts to provide local customized security services that better understand and respond to the security needs of local communities and local residents, and to provide life-friendly security services that meet the needs and expectations of local residents. However, despite this good purpose, citizens do not feel the effectiveness of the introduction of the autonomous police system, and they lack or even show negative perceptions of it. Such indifference or negative perception can cause problems such as distrust in autonomous police activities and hindering the cooperation of citizens, which is the most important in community police activities. Therefore, in order to solve this problem, efforts are required to raise citizens' awareness of autonomous police and to come up with measures to induce citizens' participation and cooperation in police activities. Based on this situation, this study aims to study the relationship between citizens' perceptions of the autonomous police system and citizens' willingness to cooperate with police activities. In addition, we would like to compensate for the problems of existing social science research that cause difficulties in confirming the exact effectiveness of major variables due to the failure to control various variables in the process. Therefore, to achieve this research purpose, this study used a quasi-experimental design using PSM (Propensity Score Matching) analysis to more objectively analyze the relationship between the perception of the autonomous police system and citizens' willingness to cooperate in police activities. The summary of the research results is as follows. First, 502 adult men and women living in Korea were divided into the degree of awareness of the autonomous police system, and the degree of citizens' willingness to cooperate with police activities, awareness of patrol activities, and awareness of procedural fairness of police activities was confirmed. This shows that the influence of the perception of the autonomous police system on the intention to cooperate in police activities cannot be accurately confirmed. Second, after setting the research subjects into two groups with the same tendency using PSM analysis, the average comparison of each variable showed that each group had the same characteristics at a statistically significant level. Third, through PSM analysis, two groups with the same tendency were formed, and through this, the analysis was conducted to confirm the relationship between the perception of the autonomous police system and citizens' intention to cooperate with the police. As a result of the study, it was confirmed that citizens who positively perceive the autonomous police system tend to participate and cooperate more actively in police activities.

지난 2021년 7월 1일부터 본격적인 자치경찰제가 실시되어 시행 3년 차에 접어들었다. 이는 지역사회와 지역주민의 치안 수요를 더 정확하게 파악하여 이에 대응한다는 지역 맞춤형 치안서비스를 제공하고 지역주민의 요구와 기대에 부합하는 생활밀착형 치안서비스를 제공하기 위한 노력의 결과라고 할 수 있다. 그러나 이와 같은 좋은 취지에도 불구하고 시민들은 자치경찰제 도입의 실효성을 체감하지 못하고 있으며, 이에 대한 인식 자체가 부족하거나 나아가 부정적인 인식을 보이기도 한다. 이와 같은 무관심 또는 부정적인 인식은 자치경찰활동에 대한 불신을 야기하고 지역사회경찰활동에서 가장 중요한 시민의 협력을 저해하는 등의 문제를 야기할 수 있다. 따라서 이러한 문제를 해결하기 위해 자치경찰에 관한 시민의 인식을 제고하고 이를 통해 경찰활동에 대한 시민의 참여와 협력을 유도할 수 있는 방안을 마련하려는 노력이 요구된다고 할 수 있다. 이와 같은 상황에 의거하여 이 연구에서는 자치경찰제도에 대한 시민의 인식과 경찰활동에 대한 시민의 협력 의사 간의 관계를 연구해보고자 한다. 또한 그 과정에서 다양한 변수를 통제하지 못해 주요 변수의 정확한 효과성을 확인하는데 어려움을 야기하는 기존 사회과학 연구의 문제점을 보완해보고자 한다. 따라서 이와 같은 연구 목적을 달성하기 위해 이 연구에서는 PSM(성향점수매칭) 분석을 활용한 준실험설계를 활용하여 자치경찰제 인식과 시민의 경찰활동 협력 의사 간의 관계를 보다 객관적으로 분석하였다. 연구결과를 요약하면 다음과 같다. 첫째, 연구 대상인 대한민국 거주 성인 남녀 502명을 자치경찰제에 관한 인식 정도로 구분하여 경찰활동에 대한 시민의 협력의사, 순찰활동에 대한 인식, 경찰활동의 절차적 공정성 인식의 정도를 확인한 결과 집단 간 차이가 있음을 확인할 수 있었다. 이는 자치경찰제에 대한 인식이 경찰활동 협력의사에 미치는 영향력을 정확하게 확인할 수 없음을 보여준다. 둘째, PSM 분석을 활용하여 동일한 성향을 가진 두 개의 집단으로 연구 대상을 설정한 뒤 각 변수의 평균비교를 실시한 결과 통계적으로 유의미한 수준에서 각 집단이 동일한 특성을 지닌 것으로 나타났다. 셋째, 이처럼 PSM 분석을 통해 동일한 성향을 가진 두 개의 집단을 구성하였고, 이를 통해 자치경찰제 인식과 시민의 경찰 협력 의사 간의 관계를 확인하기 위해 분석을 실시하였다. 연구 결과 자치경찰제를 긍정적으로 인식하는 시민일수록 경찰활동에 보다 적극적으로 참여하고 협력하려는 경향을 보인다는 사실을 확인할 수 있었다.
