The essay starts from the issue consciousness how we can understand the cultural contents of East-asia. The point is the cultural archetype of East-asian area and its spiritual ethos. I give such an example as the iconological appearances of Phoenix and its characteristics. It is closely associated with the idealistic world based upon physical forms of Phoenix and its categorization. Its vitality is to make an imagery of social integrity and to symbolize a common understanding of culture in the historical process through a totem of primitive society. From the viewpoint of iconology, the cultural world of Phoenix has the way of representing a drawing of yixiang or expressing an implicative meaning of yijing through media of image. It plays a role as a container of East-asian world-view and its methodology. Consequently, from the perspective of iconological imagination, it is possible to say that the cultural archetype of Phoenix and its spiritual ethos are oriented toward an integral horizon of creative synthesis and synthetic creativity in the unity of representational expression and expressional representation

본고에서는 동아시아의 문화콘텐츠를 어떻게 접근할 것인가 하는 문제의 식에서 출발한다. 그 논점은 문화의 원형과 그 정신적 기질을 찾는 데에 있 다. 그 사례 중의 하나로서 봉황의 세계와 意境의 생명미학을 살펴볼 것이다. 특히 봉황의 토템문화에 주목하고 그 역사적 변천의 과정을 추적하고 그 속 에서 관념론적 지향성을 모색할 것이다. 봉황의 형상적 매체는 도상학의 분 야에서 이해된다. 도상학에서는 도상의 역사적 배경, 사회적 특수성 및 문화 적 성격을 共時的이고도 通時的으로 해석한다. 도상은 세계의 실재에 관한 공통의 해석가능성을 열어놓는 특수한 표상적 기제이다. 봉황의 도상은 寫生 의 사실성을 재현하고 寫意의 관념성을 표현하면서 具象의 抽象化와 抽象의 具象化와 같은 끊임없는 생명력을 발휘해왔다. 이 생명력의 과정은 意象의 매개 속에 토템의 실물적 표상을 넘어 意境의 의식적 차원을 추구하였다. 이 의식적 차원에는 지상의 현실적 세계를 발판으로 하여 천상의 고답적 경계를 飛翔하는 영역이 있다. 즉 역사의 可逆的시간을 타고 세속과 초탈 사이의 심리적 공간을 넘나든다. 이는 봉황문화의 원형을 지속적으로 창출해내고 그 정신적 기질을 강화시켰다. 따라서 봉황의 도상학적 세계는 시대성이나 지역 성의 현재화를 통해 끊임없이 진화하면서 토템의 신비주의적 색채를 벗고 현 대의 문화콘텐츠 속에 意境의 생명미학 영역을 개척할 수 있다.
