This study is an attempt to reveal the historical background and theological significance of Luther’s German New Testament published in 1522. This year marks the 500th anniversary of the publication of Luther’s German Bible. On 21 September 1522, a German translation of Luther’s New Testament was printed by Melchior Lotter der Jungere, a publisher in Wittenberg. First, in Chapter II, I will examine what historical situations and socio-cultural backgrounds Luther’s September Bible emerged. Particular attention will be paid to the circumstances of Wartburg in 1521-22. This is because the September Bible is the product of the intersection of the time of 1521-22 and the space of Wartburg. And through comparison with the German Bibles that existed before Luther, I will look at the uniqueness and characteristics of Luther’s September Bible. Chapter III will then deal with the theological significance and importance of the September Bible. Through analysis of the prefaces, annotations, and illustrations of the September Bible, it will be reveal what Luther wanted and how the September Bible became the bestselling book of its time. The Bible is the heart of the Reformation. The Word of God was the source of reform, and in the motto of the Reformation, ‘ad fontes,’ the ‘fons’(fountain) was the Bible, the revelation of God. Therefore, all reformers who pursued church reform translated the Bible into their own language that the people could read. It is no coincidence that Pierre Vaudes translated the Bible into French, John Wycliffe into English, and Jan Hus into Czech. The German translation of the Bible, which Luther published in Wittenberg and Zwingli in Zurich, was the driving force that made their reform possible and moved.
