As the studio craft movement, which puts individual expression as an important value, has been positively accepted in university craft education, the expression method and scope of ceramic formative art have continued to expand, accepting relationships with other art genres and social issues. The attitude to reflect the unique materiality of clay affects not only the production of functional things but also the production process of ceramic sculptures, which are metaphorical things for expression and communication purposes. Among the various attempts to expand and seek the area of ceramic expression, this study aims to pay attention to 'tactile sense' and 'tactile imagination' as a way to more three-dimensional delivery and effective application of ceramic expression. Since the Renaissance, tactile sensations in paintings and sculptures have been tried in various ways as a means of extending the limits of the plane into three dimensions or stimulating the imagination of the viewer. The addition of 'tactile' to objects represented by visual senses such as color, shape, and shape can deepen the depth, reality, vitality, and memory of space in the relationship between objects and spaces, amplify communication power, and activate visual tension and vitality. In ceramic sculptures that use individual expressions as a purpose and value, when 'Tactile Sensory' is added as a color or shape element, it extends to senses such as movement, stability, warmth, or coolness as well as weight, quality, and texture. This process can emphasize the Intention of the work and at the same time evoke an expanded imagination to understand the visual characteristics in three dimensions.

현대 도자 조형예술의 다양한 표현 방식이나 대상은 타 예술 장르와의 관계 맺기, 사회, 문화적 이 슈 등을 흡수하며 표현의 외연을 확장해왔다. 도자 조형은 주요한 재료인 점토의 가소성을 바탕으로 갈라짐, 변형, 수축 등의 물리적 특징뿐만 아니라 손과 도구를 사용하는 행위까지 확장하며 타 재료, 영역과 구별되는 독창적이고 특징적인 과정도 포함하고 있다. 본 논문의 서론 부분은 ‘촉각 감각’이 회화나 조각 등의 분야에 적용된 사례를 먼저 알아보고, 그 배경과 목적이 되는 이론적 배경을 알아본 다. 그리고 물성, 기능과 비(非)기능, 기법 등을 포함한 다양한 표현 방식의 차이가 나는 도자 조형의 표현과정에 적용되는 촉각 감각의 특징을 비교하며 효용과 가치를 확인해 보고자 한다. 최근 몇 년간의 팬데믹 상황에 따라 비대면 접촉을 선호하며 사회, 문화적 수요와 흐름이 변환되는 과도기가 되었다. 역설적으로 이러한 변화를 겪으며 대면접촉의 결핍과 부재로 인한 사회, 문화적 문 제도 증가하고 있다. 신체 지각의 감각 가운데 가장 원초적이며 생명 유지에 필수적인 감각이라고 할 수 있는 ‘촉각 감각’이 평면, 시각, 입체 조형 전반에 표현 요소의 확장 가능성으로 더욱 주목받고 있다. 물성의 질감, 표현과정에서 촉각 요소를 중요하고 유효한 표현 수단으로 여겨왔던 도자 조형에 서 적극적으로 촉각 감각을 표현 요소에 적용하면 공간감, 생명력뿐만 아니라 소통과 감각 전달의 심 화까지 확장될 수 있다. 현대 도자 조형예술 표현의 대상과 범위는 상당 부분 개념화되는 과정을 통해 변화되어왔다. 그 과 정에서 시각 감각의 실현과 전달이 중요한 비중을 차지하게 되었다. 타 분야보다 직접적 촉각 감각을 사용하던 도자예술 분야에서 개념화, 시각화되는 과정에서 촉각 감각의 가치는 점점 더 소홀해졌다. 물체의 무게, 질량, 거리, 질감뿐만 아니라 움직임이나 안정감, 따뜻함 또는 시원함 등과 같은 물체의 특성을 입체적으로 이해하도록 상상력을 자극하는 역할을 하는 촉각 감각이 적극적인 표현 수단이 되 어야 한다. 이를 통해 회화나 조각물과 구별되는 표현을 모색할 수 있고, 촉각적 자극을 이용한 경험 과 상상력을 끌어들여서 미적 즐거움을 증가시킬 수 있다. 촉각 감각을 이용해 강렬한 시각적 긴장, 활력과 같은 비가시적 감각을 더해 공간에 생동감을 얻을 수 있다.
