This paper examines the intellectual and historical meaning of Kakei Katsuhiko’s Shintoism. For him, God was not an absolute transcendent, but something that all humans could reach. He thought a man devoted to the state could reach God. Kakei’s intent here is sufficiently clear. He was, in effect, defending the logic that the people should forget themselves and devote themselves to the country. It is undeniable that Kakei’s Shintoism is related to the ultra-nationalism during the Japanese imperialism period. What has to be questioned here, however, is how Kakei theorizes this logic through religion. His logic seems to be fundamentally at odds with doctrine of Christianity, but it is not far from pantheistic vitalism seen by German romanticists at that time. Kakei tried to apply Friedrich Schleiermacher or Wilhelm Dilthey’s ideas about religion to Shintoism. In so doing, great life was replaced with God, and everything was viewed as an expression of it. The Japanese emperor was also an expression of great life, that is Japan’s kokutai. By disclosing the logic of Kakei’s Shintoims, this study aims to broaden the relation between politics and religion, thereby providing us with a more nuanced and holistic account of Shintoism.

본고는 일본의 신도론을 이론화했다고 평가되는 가케이 가쓰히코 신도론의 지성사적 의미를 살펴본 다. 그에게 신이란 절대적 초월자가 아니라 모든 인간이 도달 가능한 것이었다. 이때 신에 도달할 수 있는 인간은 국가에 적합한 인물이 되는 것이었다. 나를 잊고 스스로의 일에 몰입함으로써 신=인격자 가 될 수 있다는 가르침이 그가 신도라는 종교에서 찾은 가치였다. 그러나 가케이의 신도론을 국가윤 리의 강조로만 보는 것은 일면적일 수 있다. 그의 논리는 서양의 기독교와 근본적으로 대립하는 것처 럼 보이지만, 당시의 독일낭만주의자들에게 보이는 생기론적 범신론의 이해 속에서 기독교를 해석하 려는 시도와 그리 멀지 않다. 가케이의 사상은 슈마이어마허나 딜타이의 생명의 표현이나 범신론적 생기론에서 보았던 가치를 신도적 사유로 풀어낸 것이었다. 물론 가케이의 신도식의 사유가 국가주의와 결합하게 된 배경에는 이러한 생명주의와 신에 대한 이해와의 결합이 있었음을 부정할 수 없다. 하 지만 가케이는 스피노자-슐라이어마허-딜타이의 논의 속에서 절대자를 대생명으로서 치환하여 만물 을 이 대생명의 표현으로서 바라봄으로써 천황을 둘러싼 국체논쟁에서 새로운 이해를 시도한 것으로 파악될 수 있다. ‘신도’, ‘생명’, ‘표현’이라는 그의 핵심개념이 갖는 의미와 배경을 살펴봄으로써, 본고 는 근대 일본에서의 천황제를 둘러싼 정치와 종교의 상관관계를 보다 면밀히 밝히고자 했다.
