In this article, the relationship between dictionary compilation and musicological research was examined by reviewing traditional music-related dictionaries in Korea, China, and Japan, and furthermore, Grove dictionary and MGG dictionary. Through this, it was confirmed that musicology research contributed to the basis for the procedural justification of dictionary compilation as well as its contents, also preparing for changes in contemporary and future society. Therefore, it can be said that the following matters should be considered in future dictionary compilation projects in Korea. First, it is a question of the procedural legitimacy of dictionary compilation. Musical knowledge should be balanced through thesis review. Securing the logical basis and justification to level the headwords during dictionary compilation is a very important procedure, therefore steps to control it should be provided in advance to exclude bias. Second, it is a matter of the principle of dictionary compilation. It will be necessary to thoroughly review what to accept as headwords based on principles and summaries of 1st and 2nd-generation scholars, and how to maintain intellectual balance between accepted headwords. Considering its medium characteristics the National Gugak Center’s multimedia dictionary, it is feasible to change it into a dictionary with frequent feedbacks or even an open dictionary(wiki). Third, it is a matter of intellectual alternatives to a changing society. In order to compile traditional-music-related dictionaries, one should reflect the ideological orientation of traditional music required in the contemporary and future society in advance. It will be necessary to also actively develop the articles on the music heritage of North Koreans and ethnic Koreans, and to deal with various creations in the traditional music grammar with Asian instruments and music history in mind. Fourth, efforts are needed to reconsider the definition of Korean traditional music and expand the public nature of dictionary compilation. Editing should be reinforced in future dictionaries in order to exclude bias and adjust the unilateral statements or technical imbalances between topics.

이 글에서는 한국, 중국, 일본의 전통음악 관련 사전, 나아가 Grove 사전과 MGG 사전을 검토 하여, 사전 편찬과 음악 연구의 관계를 살펴보았다. 이를 통해 향후 한국의 사전 편찬 사업 시 고려되어야 할 사항을 제언하고자 한다. 첫째, 사전 편찬의 절차적 정당성에 관한 문제이다. 먼저 논저 해제의 검토를 통해 음악 지식의 산출물을 균형 있게 구성해야 한다. 사전 편찬에서 표제어 항목 간의 수평을 맞출만한 논리적 근거와 정당성의 확보는 매우 중요한 절차로, 표제어의 배분과 특정 이론으로의 편중을 막기 위해 서는 이를 통제할 수 있는 절차를 마련해야 한다. 둘째, 사전 편찬의 원칙에 관한 문제이다. 제1세대와 2세대 학자들이 마련한 사전 편찬의 원칙, 논저 해제를 바탕으로 무엇을 표제어로 수용하고, 수용된 표제어 간의 지적 수평을 어떻게 유지할 것인지에 대한 원칙적 검토를 철저히 할 필요가 있을 것이다. 국립국악원의 멀티미디어 사전은 매체적 속성을 고려한다면, 소통력이 강화된 사전과 열린 사전(wiki)도 시도해 볼 수 있을 것이다. 셋째, 변화하는 사회에 대한 지적 대안의 문제이다. 전통음악과 관련된 사전을 편찬하기 위해서는 과거에서 벗어나 당대 및 미래 사회에서 요구되는 국악에 대한 이념의 지향을 사전에 반영하는 것을 고려해야 한다. 북한 및 해외 한국인의 음악 유산에 대한 항목을 적극적으로 개발하고, 아시아의 악기 및 음악사를 염두에 두면서 전통음악의 어법으로 된 각종 창작물도 다루어야 할 것이다. 넷째, 국악의 정의 재고와 사전의 활동에 대한 공공성의 확장을 위한 노력이 필요하다. 향후 간행될 사전에서는 편집의 기능을 심화시켜, 주제의 편중을 조정하고 기고자의 일방적 진술이나 주제 간의 기술적 불균형을 조절할 수 있는 편집이 필요할 것이다.
