What does technology have to do with the church? While seeming to fall into different categories, they are actually closely connected. This paper examines the relationship between the church and technology in the time of advanced technology which requires theological attention. Especially I focus on how Korean churches have accepted advanced technology by analyzing the case of metaverse technology which has recently caught much attention. In the second section, I explain why Korean churches were generally technologically friendly. The time when the gospel came to Korea overlaps with the period of the industrial revolution, which affected the church's technology-friendly attitude even in the process of rapid industrialization. Section 3 is an explanation of insights of the philosophy of technology that the Korean church has not fully considered, but is worth referring to. The philosophy of technology convincingly argued that (i) modern technology has philosophical and theological implications different from those of traditional technology, (ii) seeing technology as a simple tool can lead to overlooking the profound influence of technology, and (iii) technology can affect human nature as well as the understanding of human. With this in mind, section 4 introduces Metaverse, which became a hot topic in Korean churches during the COVID-19 pandemic, and presents this case as an example of the church's attitude toward cutting-edge technology. Section 5 is a critical evaluation of the metaverse craze in recent years, namely that Korean churches accepted the technology in haste and without verification of its effectiveness or theological examination. Alternatives to overcome these problems are proposed in Section 6, suggesting attitudes of (i) keeping distance and observing, (ii) verifying (iii) leading and living in symbiosis.

기술과 교회가 무슨 상관인가? 이 둘은 얼핏 보면 전혀 다른 범주에 들어가야 할 것 같지만, 실상 긴밀하게 연결되어 있다. 본 논문에서는 첨단기술이 그 영향력을 확 대해 가면서 기술에 대한 신학적 관심이 요구되는 현 상황에서, 교회와 기술의 관계 를 묻는다. 특히 한국교회가 첨단기술을 받아들이는 과정에 초점을 맞추고, 그 구체적 인 사례로 최근 큰 반향을 일으켰던 메타버스 기술을 분석한다. II절에서는 한국교회 가 대체로 기술 친화적이었던 이유를 역사적인 맥락에서 살펴본다. 한국에 복음이 들 어온 때는 산업혁명의 시기와 겹치고, 이는 이후 급격한 산업화 과정에서도 교회의 기술 친화적인 태도에 영향을 미쳤다. III절은 한국교회가 충분히 숙고한 적이 없으나 참고할 가치가 있는 기술철학의 통찰에 대한 설명이다. 20세기 중반 본격적으로 시작 된 기술철학은 (i) 현대기술은 과거의 전통적인 기술이 가졌던 것과는 다른 철학적, 신학적 함의를 가지며, (ii) 기술을 단순한 도구로만 보는 것은 기술이 미치는 심대한 영향력을 간과하는 결과를 낳고, 나아가 (iii) 기술은 인간에 대한 이해와 인간됨 자체 에도 영향을 미친다는 주장을 설득력 있게 제시한 바 있다. 이를 염두에 두고서 IV절 에서는 코로나 19 팬데믹 기간 동안 한국교회에서 큰 화제가 되었던 메타버스를 소개 하고, 이 기술이 짧은 시간 안에 큰 관심의 대상이 된 일을 교회가 첨단기술을 대하 는 태도를 보여주는 한 사례로서 제시한다. V절은 메타버스의 수용 과정에 대한 비판적 고찰이다. 메타버스 기술 자체에 대한 평가를 차치하고서라도, 지난 몇 년 동안 교 회가 보여준 모습은 아직 완성되지 않은 기술의 성급한 도입, 그 효과성에 대한 검증 의 부재, 신학적 검토의 부족이라는 점에서 여러 가지 문제를 노정하였다. 이런 문제 를 극복하기 위한 대안을 VI절에서 제안하였는데, 이를 (i) 거리두기와 관찰하기, (ii) 검증하기 (iii) 선도하기와 공생하기 등으로 정리하여 제시한다.
