Focusing on the increasing political roles of older adults in a rapidly aging society, this study explores how the determinants of voting choice differ by age cohorts according to aging and generational effects. To this end, this study conducted a two-wave national online survey of two age groups (60 years and older vs. 18-29 years old) in the 2020 Korean legislative election. According to the results, first, party preference as an outcome of political socialization appeared to be a more significant determinant of voting choice among people aged 60 or older. Second, the effects of retrospective evaluation of the incumbent president differed between the two age groups. The evaluation of presidential performance on the COVID-19 issue significantly influenced older adults’ vote choice whereas that of presidential performance on economic issues mattered to the vote choice of younger adults. Third, social intermediaries such as the news media and political discussion networks had little influence on the vote choice in general, but younger voters appeared more open to interpersonal influence; face-to-face political discussions strengthened their support for opposition parties’ candidates in the particular election.

초고령화 속에서 고령 유권자의 영향력이 확대되는 가운데 선거에서 ‘세대’ 요인의 중요성이 부상해 왔다. 이 연구는 노년층과 청년층의 비교를 통해, 노년 층의 투표 선택을 견인하는 요인에 연령효과와 세대효과가 어떻게 작용하는지 를 탐색하고자 했다. 개인적 태도 차원에서는 지지 정당, 정치이념 성향 및 회고적 평가를, 사회적 영향력 차원에서는 미디어를 통한 정치 정보 이용과 정치 대 화를 투표 선택 요인으로 고려했다. 2020년 제21대 국회의원 총선거에서 만 60 세 이상과 만 18세에서 29세 사이의 유권자에 대해 선거 전후로 2회의 전국 규 모 온라인 조사(N = 550)를 실시한 결과, 연령집단 간 투표 선택 요인에서 흥미 로운 차이가 관찰됐다. 첫째, 정체성 형성기에 정립된 정치사회화 요인인 정당 선호도의 효과는 만 60세 이상 유권자 집단에서 더 유의미하게 나타났다. 둘째, 대통령에 대한 회고적 평가의 효과는 연령층에 따라 상이했는데, 노년층에서는 감염병 대응에 대한 평가가, 청년층에서는 경제 문제 대처에 대한 평가가 투표 선택에 유의미하게 작용했다. 셋째, 노년층에서는 투표 선택에 대한 미디어와 대인 커뮤니케이션의 효과가 나타나지 않았으나, 20대 유권자 집단에서는 면대 면 정치대화가 야당 후보에 대한 선택을 강화한 것으로 나타났다.
