This paper focuses on the spiritual background of the Daejonggyo anti-Japanese struggle. In particular, we tried to pay attention to the fundamental reason for the IM-O-GYO-BYEON(壬午敎變, the persecution of Daejonggyo in 1942), the largest religious persecution event in Japanese colonial era. Until now, Daejonggyo research has been mainly focused on the superficial independence movement. However, to view Daejonggyo's anti-Japanese struggle as a mere phenomenal conflict with Japanese imperialism is an understanding that deviates from its essence. This is because the conflict of identity underlying it is essential. Why did Japanese imperialism attempt to completely exterminate Daejonggyo during the colonial period? On the other hand, why did Daejonggyo want to resist until the end by losing everything? Its essence is not irrelevant to the nature of Daejonggyo. This is because the emergence of Daejonggyo is the same meaning as the revival of modern Korean identity such as our national motto(國是), national festival(國典), national origins(國紀), state religion(國敎), korean language(國語), korean history(國史). Japanese imperialism was also absolutely necessary to transplant their identity to complete colonial rule. This is why Japanese imperialism had no choice but to exterminate Daejonggyo. On the other hand, Daejonggyo is the group that fought for everything to protect it.

이 논문은 대종교 항일투쟁의 정신적 배경에 초점을 맞춘 글이다. 특히 일제강점기 최대 종교박해 사건인 임오교변(壬午敎變)이 일 어나게 된 근본적인 이유에 주목하고자 하였다. 그 동안 대종교 연구는 주로 표면적인 독립운동에만 치우쳐 왔다. 그러나 대종교 의 항일투쟁을 일제와의 단순한 현상적 충돌로만 바라보려는 것 은 그 본령에서 벗어난 이해다. 그 기저에 깔린 정체성의 충돌이 본질이기 때문이다. 일제가 강점 기간 처음부터 끝까지 대종교를 완전 말살하려 한 이유가 무엇일까. 반면 대종교가 모든 것을 잃 어가며 마지막까지 저항하고자 한 까닭이 어디에 있는가. 그 본질 은 바로 대종교의 성격과 무관치 않다. 대종교의 등장은 우리의 국시(國是)·국전(國典)·국기(國紀)·국교(國敎)·국어·국사 등의 한민족 근대정체성의 부활과 동일한 의미이기 때문이다. 일 제 역시 식민지배의 완성을 위해 그들의 정체성 이식이 절대적이 었다. 일제가 대종교를 말살시킬 수밖에 없었던 이유다. 반면 그 것을 지키기 위해 모든 것을 걸고 투쟁한 집단이 대종교다.
