This thesis is a study of Tsze-kung's personality and academic relationship. According to the articles of Tsze-kung recorded in the classics, Tsze-kung was a man born with heavenly luck. Unlike other students of Confucius academy, he did not spend any special time and effort on learning and character development, but he had genius inspiration that no one could follow, fluent speech skills, public affinity, ability to look into other people's thoughts, and vision for the future. As well he had foresight and integrative thinking ability. This personality and ability of Tsze-kung may be due to his brilliance of innate qualities, but it seems that it was possible thanks to the vast culture he learned under Confucius, and Tsze-kung also acknowledged this aspect and consistently followed and respected Confucius. The fact that Tsze-kung was able to develop outstanding activities in the international diplomatic arena and demonstrate outstanding talent in the field of eloquence was possible because these two elements were fused together. These two activities are representative projects developed by Tsze-kung. Through these two projects, Tsze-kung saved the kingdoms of Lû[魯] and Wei[衛] from the crisis of imminent peril several times, made Confucius' name widely known all over the world, and also promoted Confucius’ Thought as the ‘Great Teaching’[顯學] of the world. Tsze-kung was said to be an excellent disciple in the field of speech skills[言, diplomacy] among the Ten philosophers in Confucius academy, and as a person who was in all directions in literature[文學], politics, and personal affairs. he was the best talent produced by Confucius academy.

이 논문은 자공(子貢)의 인물됨과 사승(師承) 관계에 대해 고찰한 것이다. 고전에 기록된 자공의 기사에 의하면 자공은 천운(天運)을 타고난 사람이었다. 그는 공문(孔門)의 다른 제자들과 달리, 학문 연마와 인격 수양에 특별한 시간과 노력을 들이지 않았지만, 누구도 따를 수 없는 천재적 영감, 유창한 화술, 대중 친화력, 남의 생각을 들여다 보는 능력, 미래를 내다보는 예지력, 통합적 사고 능력을 지니고 있었다. 이러한 자공의 인격과 능력은 그의 타고난 자질의 영준함에 의한 면도 있겠지만 공자 밑에서 익힌 광대한 교양 덕분에 가능했다고 보는데, 자공 또한 이런 면을 인정하고 시종일관 공자를 따르고 존경했다. 자공이 국제외교 무대에서 뛰어난 활동을 전개하고 화식(貨殖) 분야에서 탁월한 재주를 발휘할 수 있었던 것도 이 두 요소가 한 데 융합되어 있었기 때문에 가능했다. 이 두 활동은 자공이 전개한 대표적인 사업으로서, 자공은 이 두 가지 사업을 통해 노나라[魯]와 위나라[衛]를 여러 차례 누란의 위기에서 구했고, 공자의 이름을 천하에 널리 알렸으며, 공자의 학을 천하의 ‘현학(顯學)’으로서 홍양(弘揚)시켰다. 자공은 공문십철(孔門十哲) 가운데 언어[외교] 분야에 탁월한 제자로 들렸으며, 문학에서도 정치에서도 사리에서도 사통팔달(四通八達)한 사람으로서, 공문이 배출한 최고의 인재였다.
