The same-sex marriage between Bang Gwan-ju and Yeong Hye-bing, the female protagonists of was possible because they chose their partner as a viable target, but there was a difference in their intentions. This is evident in the way the two women respond to identities that come violently to the two women bystanders and Young Hye-bing. Bystanders deny the female identity itself and choose marriage to possess and acquire subjectivity in the process of imitating male identity. On the other hand, Young Hye-bing rejects the identity imposed on women, but paradoxically chooses to use the marriage system to cover it up externally. This means that the life option given in front of women inevitably results in either transfer or resistance, and it is understood that the acquisition of women's subjectivity is still difficult. However, the two main characters of , Bang Gwan-ju and Yeong Hye-bing, constantly try to escape from their given identity. Sometimes, even if the method is only incorporation and resistance, it is the same for both women in that it is the process of surviving the oppression and restraint given to women and standing as subjects, and it is interdependence that plays an important role. In this respect, it is necessary to once again note that the system of marriage lies at the root of the identity imposed on women. Bystander and Young Hye-bing's conflicting reactions make us look back on the power hierarchy of the marriage system. This paper corresponds to a request for a change of direction to the perspective focused on the ripple effect and gender of the subject of same-sex marriage in the interpretation surrounding . Rather, it reminds us that the marriage system, which exists as a hierarchy, can sometimes be reset as a buffer zone to secure safety. Therefore, an attempt to take a new approach to the problem of identity and subjectivity surrounding the focusing on the relationship with the system is necessary, and this paper corresponds to pointing out this.

<방한림전>은 여성 주체인 방관주와 영혜빙이 동성 결혼이라는 금기시 된 소재를 전면에 드러냄으로써 중세적 지배 질서에 강한 충격을 던지는 작품으로 고전소설사에서 주목되었다. <방한림전>은 신분제 계급 사회에 서 국가의 존속에 기초적 토대를 제공하는 결혼 제도가 작중 두 여성에게 구속과 억압의 굴레로 작동하면서 빚어내는 고난과 고뇌의 흔적을 살피게 한다. <방한림전>의 여성 주인공 방관주와 영혜빙의 동성 결혼은 실행 가 능한 대상으로 상대를 선택한 것이기에 가능했으나, 근본적으로 각자 의도 한 것에 차이가 있었다. 이점은 방관주와 영혜빙 두 여성에게 폭력적으로 다가오는 정체성에 대한 두 여성의 대응 방식에서 확연히 드러난다. 방관주는 여성 정체성 자체를 부정하고 남성 정체성을 모방하는 과정에 서 주체성을 전유하고 획득하기 위해 결혼을 선택한다. 반면 영혜빙은 여성 에게 강요된 정체성을 거부하되, 이를 대외적으로 은폐하기 위해 역설적으 로 결혼 제도를 활용하는 방식을 선택한다. 이는 여성 앞에 주어진 삶의 선 택지가 편입 또는 저항 둘 중에 하나로 귀결될 수밖에 없음을 의미하며, 여 성의 주체성 획득이 여전히 난망함을 여실히 보여주는 것으로 이해된다. 하 지만 <방한림전>의 두 주인공 방관주와 영혜빙은 주어진 정체성에서 끊임 없이 벗어나고자 시도한다. 때론 그 방식이 편입과 저항뿐일지라도 이는 결 국 여성에게 주어진 억압과 구속에서 살아나 주체로 서기 위한 과정이라는 점에선 두 여성 모두에게 동일하며 이때 중요한 역할을 하는 게 바로 상호 의존성이다. 이런 측면에서 여성에게 강요되는 정체성의 근저에 결혼이라 는 제도가 자리하고 있음을 다시 한번 주지할 필요가 있다. 방관주와 영혜 빙의 상반된 반응은 결혼 제도가 가진 권력적 위계를 되돌아보게 한다. 본고는 <방한림전>을 둘러싼 정체성과 주체성의 문제에 관해 제도와의 관계를 중심으로 새롭게 접근하는 시도가 필요하다는 점을 지적한 것에 해당된다.
