After Chronological records are a genre of Sinography to document an individual’s life chronologically. It’s also the historically established style according to temporal and spatial context. Till the early Joseon period, it was like a sketch of one’s governmental career. When Kang-mok style (綱目式) was introduced in late 16th century and Taegye-yeonbo was published in early 17th century, however, Kang-mok style chronology became the dominant one to record an eminent figure. Taegye-yeonbo followed the example of Juja-yeonbo (Zhuzi-nianpu, 朱子年譜), collecting various kinds of documents that support the authority of the object individual. YRyo Sung-Ryong, the most politically successful disciple of Yi Hwang, had participated as the editor-in-chief, which made the book more prestigious. As a result, the Taegye-yeonbo was understood unchallenged like a history, to the extent that it was referred to as a major source to write the Revised version of Seonjosilnok (宣祖修正實錄). It became the most successful outcome among all the chronological records compiled before, in terms of securing truthfulness and authority, and had a direct impact on the chronological records published in later generations.

연보는 개인의 삶을 편년식으로 기록하는 한문학 양식으로, 시대적 맥락 속에서 그 형식과 내용을 갖춰나간 역사적 산물이기도 하다. 조선 초기까지 연보는 인물의 관력을 요약한 약력이 주조였는데, 16세기 후반에 강목식 연보가 도입되고 17세기 초엽에 『퇴계연보』의 편간을 거치면서 강목식 연보는 비로소 유력한 인물의 삶을 기술하는 일반적인 양식이 되었다. 『퇴계연보』는 단행본의 편차와 구성에 있어 『주자연보』를 전범으로 삼아 보주의 권위에 도움이 되는 여러 글을 합부하였다. 이와 함께 이황의 제자 가운데 정치적으로 가장 현저한 성공을 거둔 인물인 유성룡이 『퇴계연보』의 편찬을 담당함으로써 확고한 권위를 확보할 수 있었다. 이로써 후대에 『퇴계연보』는 일종의 역사서처럼 내용의 진위를 의심받지 않고 수용었는데, 이는 『선조수정실록』의 편수에 『퇴계연보』가 중요한 자료로 활용되었다는 점에서도 잘 드러난다. 그리하여 『퇴계연보』는 진실성과 권위의 확보라는 측면에서 이전까지 편간된 모든 연보 가운데 가장 성공적인 결과물이 되었으며 후대의 연보 편간에 직접적인 영향을 주었다.
