This article reviewed seven letters delivered from Tokugawa Ieyasu to Sō Yoshitoshi, who was the owner of Tsushima during the period of Joseon-Japan peace negotiations after the Imjin war. These letters were mostly about Ieyasu’s appreciation of the materials offered by Yoshitoshi. Through several of Ieyasu’s replies, it was possible to determine that Yoshitoshi’s letters that preceded this reported the situation of negotiations with Joseon. In addition, the letters include Ieyasu’s actions on the progress of the peace negotiations. Through this situation, it is possible to understand the will and movement of the Tokugawa regime, which played a role in the background of the peace negotiations at the time. The reason Yoshitoshi reported to Ieyasu the details of the negotiations with Joseon was to be recognized for the initiative in the situation where other daimyō also intervened. Furthermore, it can be inferred that Yoshitoshi dedicated the materials from Joseon to Ieyasu to prove his diplomatic abilities in the direction of Joseon and access the power of the Tokugawa regime at the same time.

본 논문에서는 임진왜란 이후의 조일 강화교섭 시기에 도쿠가와 이에야스로부터 쓰시마 도주 소 요시토시에게 전달된 7통의 서장을 분석하였다. 이 서장들은 대체로 요시토시가 헌상한 물품에 대한 이에야스의 감사를 담은 내용이었다. 한편 일부 서장에 적힌 이에야스의 답신 내용을 통해서는 이에 선행하였던 요시토시의 서장들이 조선과의 교섭 상황을 보고한 것이었음을 추측할 수 있었다. 게다가 몇몇 서장들은 강화교섭의 진척에 대한 이에야스의 조치사항을 적은 것이었다. 이를 통해 당시 조일 강화교섭의 저변에 작용하였던 도쿠가와 정권 측의 의지와 움직임을 확인해볼 수 있었다. 이처럼 요시토시가 이에야스에게 조선과의 교섭 경위를 보고하였던 이유는 다른 다이묘들도 강화교섭에 개입하는 상황 속에서 주도권을 인정받기 위해서였다. 나아가 이를 위하여 요시토시는 조선 방면에 대한 외교 능력을 입증함과 동시에 막부 권력에 접근하고자 조선으로부터 수령한 물품을 이에야스에게 헌상하였음을 추측할 수 있었다.
