The content introduced in this article is a brief look at the creation and change of the name of the place, targeting the data compiled through the “Local Folk Survey around the Hongcheon Pumping Power Plant.” People make geographical names because they have a special perception of space. The place name is created by discovering the specificity of the space I belong to in the same topographic branch and recognizing the space based on it. In addition, the name of the place is expanded through the expansion of geographical proximity and thought. We often believe that geographical names exist as a result of geographical origin stories, but sometimes they do not. This case is found in the process of refraction of geographical names. It is a case in point that the statement that there were many maple trees near the city as the “town flowing east” became the “楓川” is a representative example. On the other hand, when there is no natural basis to mobilize for the expansion or conversion of a place name, a new place name origin story is created through a story with attractive pixels. As such, it is confirmed once again that there is an interest and special perception of the space in which one lives. The contents proposed and claimed here may be revised if additional data are investigated or supplemented. However, in terms of reporting the results of the field investigation, a clumsy article is submitted.

이 글에서 소개한 내용은 ‘홍천 양수 민속 조사’를 통해 정리한 자료를 대상 으로 하여 지명의 생성과 변화를 간단히 살펴본 것이다. 사람들이 지명을 만드는 것은 공간에 대한 특수한 인식이 있기 때문이다. 동일한 지형 갈래 속에서 내가 속한 공간이 지니는 특수성을 발견하고 그를 바탕으로 공간을 인식함으로써 지명이 만들어진다. 그리고 지형적 인접성, 사 유의 확장을 통해서 지명의 확장도 이뤄진다. 우리는 흔히 지명 유래설화의 결과로 지명이 존재한다고 여기지만 그렇지 않은 경우도 발견된다. 지명이 굴절을 겪는 과정에서 이러한 사례가 발견된다. ‘동쪽을 흐르는 시내’가 ‘楓川’이 되면서 시내 근처에 단풍나무가 많았다는 진술에 가까운 설명이 붙는 것은 대표적인 사례인다. 한편 지명의 확장이나 전환에 동원할 어떤 자연적 근거가 없을 때에는 흡인력 있는 화소를 지닌 이야 기를 통해서 새로운 지명 유래담을 만들기도 한다. 이처럼 지명에는 자신이 살아가는 공간에 대한 관심과 각별한 인식이 존재하 고 있음을 다시 한 번 확인하게 된다. 여기서 제안하고 주장한 내용은 추가적인 자료의 조사나 보완이 이뤄지면 수정이 될 수 있을 것이다. 다만 현장 조사의 결과를 보고한다는 측면에서 성근 글을 제출한다.
