After the Edo Shogunate was established throughout the country, the situation was almost stable without war and promoted the development of agriculture, commerce, and handicraft industries. Therefore, vocabulary for each field of commercial, industrial, and agricultural activities was required, and the time has come when the acquisition of vocabulary affects productivity. In a feudal society where people have to live in a fixed occupation for the rest of their lives, learning knowledge by occupation has become more necessary. Although tenaraijuku focused on tenarai, the vocabulary was chosen based on practical use in the real world, and the teaching of letters at tenaraijuju was truly very practical. The purpose of this paper is to first clarify the characteristics of tenaraijuku, and then to confirm the practical value of oraimono(Japanese traditional textbooks for reading and writing) as a teaching material that shows the practicality of tenaraijuku.

에도 막부의 전국 통일 이후, 전란 없이 거의 안정된 정세는 농업을 비롯하여 상업, 수공업 등 산업의 발전을 촉진했다. 이에 상업 활동, 공업 활동, 농업 활동의 각각의 분야에서 필요한 어휘가 생겨나고 그 습득이 생산력에 영향을 미치는 시대가 도래했다. 평생 정해진 직업으로 살아가야 하는 봉건적 신분사회 하에 서민의 직업별 지식 학습은 더욱 필요성이 확대되었음은 말할 나위 없다. 특정 어휘가 현실사회에서의 실용을 기준으로 선택되어 이를 학습의 대상으로 삼았다는 측면에서 데나라이주쿠 문자 교육은 실로 실용적이었다고 할 수 있다. 본고는 먼저 데나라이주쿠의 교육기관으로서의 특징을 밝힌 후 데나라이주쿠 문자 교육의 실용성이 잘 드러나는 교재로서 산업과 오라이모노(往来物)를 통하여 그 실용적 가치를 구체적으로 확인하는 것을 목적으로 한다.

全国を統一して江戸幕府が開いた以降、戦乱なくほぼ安定した情勢は農業をはじめ商業、手工業など産業の発展を促進した。そこで商業活動、工業活動、農業活動のそれぞれの分野ごとの語彙が必要とされ、その習得が生産力に影響を及ぼす時代が到来した。一生決まった職業で生きていかなければならない封建的身分社会の下で、庶民の職業別知識学習はさらに必要性が拡大した。手習塾は、習字を中心とした庶民教育機関であるが、特定語彙が現実社会での実用に基づいて選ばれ、これを学習の対象としたという側面から手習塾での文字教育は実に実用的であったといえる。 本稿では、まず手習塾の教育機関としての特徴を明らかにした上で手習塾での文字教育の実用性がよく表れる教材として、産業課往来物を通じてその実用的価値を具体的に確認することを目的とする。
