초록
영어
The purpose of the study is to investigate the body mass index(BMI), body image and physical fitness in college students. A total of 49 male (n=28) and female (n=21) participants (age = 22.37±1.88 years) were recruited from a college in S University. Participants measured BMI, body image, and physical fitness. A simple questionnaire was used to investigate the perception of one's body image, and the current BMI was compared. Physical fitness tests performed grip strength, sit–up, 20m shuttle run, sit-and-reach, 10m run, standing long jump. The measured value for each physical fitness level was calculated as 1st grade (good), 2nd grade (average), and 3rd grade (bad) based on the standard value for each age group of 100 national physical fitness. As a result of the study, the male college students with normal weight (52%) recognized their body image as normal (52%). On the other hand, only 48% of female college students with a normal weight (81%) recognized them as normal weight, while the rest (33%) recognized them as skinny. 22% of male college students recognized they were thin, but 18% were underweight, and 33% of female college students recognized they were thin, but only 5% were actually underweight. Also, it was found that female college students had high physical fitness (muscular strength, muscular endurance, cardiorespiratory endurance, and agility) and exercised to control their weight. These results suggest that the higher the level of fitness, the more likely they are to have a positive perception of their body image. Therefore, it is necessary to consider other factors such as physical fitness level to body image studies.
