This study focuses on local assimilations like place, laryngeal, and manner assimilations in Marathi. Progressive and regressive directions apply to place assimilation; only onset-driven assimilation occurs in laryngeal and manner assimilation. Leftward place assimilation arises when adjacent consonants with the coronal place feature do not have identical anterior features. So a more marked retroflex in syllable coda transmits its [-ant] feature onto the following dental or alveolar consonant. Laryngeal assimilation is induced by an onset obstruent and anticipatory manner assimilation only occurs between two sibilants with non-identical manner features, rendering sibilant geminates. To explain all types of assimilation, we propose one unified constraint ranking that can account for types of assimilations in Marathi.
