This study analyzed the factors determining the competitiveness of Korea’s pro baseball teams. Win rates were used as the dependent variable to indicate teams’ competitiveness, while various factors, including the average salary of players on a team, club operating expenses, team size, player seniority, number of FA players in the preceding year, sabermetrics indexes (showing offensive, pitching, and defensive abilities), and the capabilities of the coach etc. were used as independent variables. As a result of correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis performed on data from 2016 to 2020, OPS and WHIP—which act as indicators of offensive and pitching abilities in sabermetrics—were confirmed as having a significant relationship with teams’ win rates. WAA—which acts as an indicator of defensive abilities—was found to be correlated with win rates; however, average salary of players, club operating expenses, player seniority, number of FA players in the preceding year, coaches’ seniority and coaches’ historical win rates etc. were found to have insignificant correlation with win rates. The findings of this study imply that pro baseball clubs are better served by a strategy that strengthens and manages variables directly connected to athletic performance, including offensive and pitching capabilities, rather than a simple focus on scale of investment.

본 연구는 한국 프로야구 팀들의 경쟁력 결정 요인을 분석하였다. 경쟁력을 나타내는 종속변수로는 팀 승률이 사용되었고, 독립변수로는 팀 평균 연봉, 구단 운영비, 선수단 규모, 선수 연차, 직전년도 FA 선수의 수, 공격력․투수력․수 비력을 나타내는 세이버 메트릭스 지표, 감독의 역량 등 다양한 요인들이 활용되었다. 2016~2020년 간 자료를 상관관계 분석과 다중회귀분석을 통해 연구한 결과 세이버 메트릭스의 공격력, 투수력 지표인 OPS, WHIP는 팀 승률과의 관계에 있어서 유의성이 확인되었고 수비력 지표인 WAA는 승률과의 상관관계가 확인되었지만, 팀 평균 연봉, 구단 운영비, 선수 연차, FA 직전 년도 선수의 수, 감독의 연차, 감독의 역대 승률과 팀 승률 등 변수의 유의성은 기각되었다. 이러한 결과는 국내 프로야구 구단이 경쟁력을 확보하기 위해서는 단순한 투자 규모보다는 공격력이나 투수력 지표와 같은 직접적인 경기력 결정 변수를 강화하고 관리할 수 있는 구단 운영 전략이 필요함을 시사한다.
