The purpose of this study is to explore the background of the birth of Badminton in Japan and the historical significance of the early settlement process. Data analysis was conducted from the 1920s, the early days of Badminton in Japan, to the period before 1946, when the Nippon Badminton Association(NBA) was founded, and the literature review method was applied. The literature for this study included in-depth research on historical references published by the NBA, Korea Badminton Association, as well as academic papers and press reports from both Korea and Japan. Insufficient data were supplemented through e-mail and telephone interviews with officials of the NBA and Yokohama YMCA. Badminton in Japan was introduced through foreign sports clubs and YMCA in port cities such as Yokohama at the time, and was centered on student (university) sports. Based on this, the local Badminton association was first established and later the NBA was established, building up a developmental system. At that time, Japan was interacting with China, Indonesia, and Thailand, where Badminton began early, through friendly matches. In Japanese colonial era, however, content in the exchanges with our country is difficult to find. Recently, a historical study of Badminton beginnings has been attempted in Japanese academia. The significance of this study is to provide useful basic data for an in-depth follow-up study on the roots of Badminton in Korea, including Badminton exchanges between Korea and Japan in the early stages. Furthermore, we present clear facts about the introduction and settlement process of Badminton in Japan, which is inaccurately recognized in the sports world in Korea.

본 연구의 목적은 일본 배드민턴의 태동 배경과 초기 정착과정을 탐색하는 데 있다. 자료 분석은 일본 배드민턴 초창기인 1920년대부터 일본배드민턴협회가 창립된 1946년 이전 시기를 분석대상으로 설정하여 문헌고찰 방법을 적용 하였다. 본 연구를 위한 관련 문헌으로는 한⋅일 양국의 배드민턴협회에서 발간한 자료와 학계 논문 및 언론보도 자료 등을 심층 조사하였다. 부족한 자료는 일본배드민턴협회와 요코하마YMCA 관계자와의 이메일과 전화 인터뷰를 통해 보완하였다.일본의 배드민턴은 당시 요코하마 등 항구도시의 외국인 스포츠클럽과 YMCA를 통하여 소개되었고, 학생 (대학) 스포츠 중심으로 전개되었다. 이를 기반으로 지역 배드민턴협회가 먼저 발족되고 나중에 중앙조직인 일본배드민 턴협회가 설립되면서 조직적인 체제를 갖추었다. 당시 일본은 중국, 인도네시아, 태국 등 배드민턴이 일찍 시작된 나라와 는 친선경기 등을 통해 교류하고 있었으나 우리나라와의 교류 내용은 발견하기 어렵다. 일본 학계에서 자국 배드민턴의 역사에 대한 고증적 연구가 시도되고 있다. 우리나라의 스포츠계에서 부정확하게 인식되고 있는 일본 배드민턴의 도입과 정착과정에 대한 명확한 사실관계를 제시하고, 초기 단계의 한⋅일 간 배드민턴 교류 등을 포함한 우리나라 배드민턴의 뿌리에 대한 후속 연구에 유용한 기초자료를 제공하는 데 본 연구의 의의가 있다.
