This study collects and investigates narratives produced in connection with the Hong Kyeong-rae‘ rebellion from modern to modern times as much as possible, and prepares a list classified by year and genre. It briefly introduces the characteristics and contents so that the secured data can be organized and the entire flow of the collected input text can be grasped. Focusing on this, it was intended to establish a framework for in-depth understanding and analysis methods to explore the genealogy and direction of modern and contemporary Hong Kyeong-rae's narrative. In 1917, rebellion of Hong Kyeong-rae's narrative, led by Choi Nam-seon's edition “Hong Kyeong-rae Silgi”, was a popular subject, and in the 1930s, intellectuals who played the role of literary men, historians, educators, and editors rushed to publish new facts in magazines and newspapers. In the 1940s and 50s, well-known and unknown writers such as Park Jong-hwa and others arranged modern novel techniques or experimental settings in earnest and published novels about Hong Kyeong-rae‘ rebellion in newspapers. It is characterized by focusing on individual agony or relationships between characters rather than the development of orchids. In the 1960s and 1980s, Lee Jong-hak and Choi Nam-baek actively appeared surrounding or virtual characters, not centered on Hong Kyeong-rae, to create detailed narratives. In addition, the so-called ‘collection of historical narratives’ is gaining popularity, so it is notable that it is published in a short series in newspapers or magazines, or collecting unconfirmed facts and interest-oriented contents taken from Yadam, the folk story. The narrative of Hong Kyeong-rae in the 90s and 2000s is reproduced as a cartoon and learning textbook. The age of the expected readers has decreased and is divided into two branches: interest and educational purposes. From the 2000s to the present, it has been actively used as a material for character backgrounds or detailed narratives in video media such as dramas and movies. In particular, the narrative of Hong Kyeong-rae and rebellion, which is consumed through new media such as platforms such as YouTube, webtoons, and musicals, is interesting.

본 연구에서는 근대에서 현대에 이르기까지 홍경래난과 관련하여 생산된 서사들을 최대한 빠짐 없이 수집․조사하여 연도별․장르별로 구분한 목록을 작성함과 동시에, 확보한 자료를 정리하고 수집된 입력 텍스트에 대해 전체 흐름을 파악할 수 있도록 특징과 내용을 간략히 소개한다. 이를 중심으로 심도 있는 이해와 분석 방법의 틀을 구축하여 본격적으로 근․현대 생산된 홍경래난 서사의 계보 및 방향성을 탐색하고자 했다. 1917년 최남선의 활판본 󰡔홍경래실기󰡕를 필두로 홍경래난 서사는 인기있는 소재였으며, 1930년대에는 문학가․역사가․교육자․편집자 역할을 맡던 지식인들이 홍경래난과 관련하여 새로운 사실이 발견되면 앞다투어 잡지․신문에 게재하였다. 1940-50년대에 들어서면 박종화와 같은 유․무명 작가들이 본격적으로 현대적 소설 기법 또는 실험적인 설정을 배치하여 홍경래난을 다룬 소설을 신문에 연재한다. 난의 전개보다는 개인의 고뇌나 인물간 관계에 초점을 두고 서술하는 것이 특징이다. 1960-80년대에는 이종학, 최남백 등이 홍경래가 중심이 아닌 주변 인물 또는 가상 인물을 적극 등장시켜 세부 서사를 꾸려나가는 양상을 보인다. 또 이른바 ‘역사서사물 모음집’이 인기를 끌어서 신문이나 잡지에 짧게 연재된 것, 혹은 야담에서 취해온 확인되지 않은 사실과 흥미 위주의 내용을 모아 단행본으로 펴내는 현상이 두드러진다. 90년대에서 2000년대의 홍경래난 서사는 만화와 학습교재로써 재생산된다. 예상독자층의 연령이 낮아졌고 흥미와 교육적 목적 두 갈래로 양분된다. 2000년대부터 현재까지는 드라마, 영화와 같은 영상 매체의 인물 배경이나 세부 서사의 소재로 적극 활용되고 있다. 특히 유투브와 같은 플랫폼, 웹툰, 뮤지컬과 같은 신종 매체를 통해 소비되는 홍경래난 서사가 이채롭다.
