This paper intends to elucidate the modernity and historical significance of Min Young-hwan's 『Haecheon Chubeom』 by examining the changes in perception of the world and self-awareness. To this end, we pay attention to the fact that 『Haecheon Chubeom』 is not simply a public record, but frequently reveals personal emotions. 『Haecheon Chubeom』 expresses loyalty to the king and inherits the tradition of traditional travel literature. On the one hand, we pay attention to the fact that it also has the characteristics of modern travelogues that lead to the expression of individual emotions, change in self-awareness, discovery of others, and modern awareness. This study pays attention to the fact that meeting with others while traveling contributes to the change of the world view and identity of Min Young-hwan. This is concretely revealed in the process of communication with the compatriots I met on the way back from the trip. Min Young-hwan feels patriotism through the process of performing tasks while traveling. And on the way home, he experiences comradeship through direct encounters with Korean compatriots. As such, 『Haecheon Chubeom』 is considered to have value in that it shows the change of perception of Min Young-hwan and the process of establishing attitude as a politician.

본고는 『해천추범』에 나타난 세계 체험과 민영환의 인식 변화 양상을 고찰하여 『해천추범』의 근대성과 문학사적 의의를 해명하고자 한다. 『해천추범』에는 서구의 다양한 근대 과학 기술과 산업 시설 공간을 소개하고, 이를 바탕으로 조선이 나아갈 근대화 방향에 대한 대안이 담겨 있다. 뿐만 아니라 제국주의 열강의 침략 위기에 놓인 조선 현실에 대한 자각과 근대 군사 제도의 확립 및 근대 교육 도입의 필요성을 강조한다. 본고에서는 『해천추범』이 단순히 사행 업무만을 기록한 공적 기록물이 아니라 개인의 감 정 노출이 빈번하게 나타난다는 점에 주목한다. 나아가 여행이 근대 조선인의 타자 인식과 개인의 정체성에 어떻게 기여하고 있는지를 살펴본다. 또한 『해천추범』이 연군 문학과 기행 가사 문학 등 사행기의 전통을 계승하면서도, 근대적 시공간에 대한 인식, 서구 근대 문물 소개, 음력과 양력 및 러시아력에 대한 이해, 개인의 감정 표출, 자기 인식 변화, 타자의 발 견, 근대적 자각으로 나아가는 근대 여행기로의 특징을 지닌다는 점에 대해 살펴본다. 특히나 본고에서는 여행 중 타자와의 만남이 민영환이라는 한 개인의 세계관과 정체성 변 화에 기여한다는 점에 주목한다. 이점은 귀국길에서 만난 유민들과의 소통 과정에서 구체적 으로 드러난다. 유민들을 만난 당시 민영환은 유민들의 삶 자체를 인정하지 않고 위정자로서 임무에 충실할 뿐이었다. 그러나 유민들과 직접적 소통을 하고 그들의 삶을 목도하면서 인식 의 변화를 보인다. 민영환은 러시아 사행 업무 수행 과정을 통해서 애국심을, 귀국길 조선 유민들과의 직접적인 만남을 통해서 동포애를 경험한다. 이렇듯 『해천추범』은 민영환의 인식 변화와 위정자로서 태도 확립의 과정을 보여준다는 점에서도 그 가치를 갖는다고 본다.
