The purpose of this study is to reinterpret the thought system and its meaning of revolution of Donghak inherent in the Donghak Peasant Revolution. To this end, while revealing the meaning of the existing Donghak Peasant Revolution, at the same time reestablishing the concept of revolution inherent in Donghak thought. In addition, the true value of Donghak culture and its influence will be reexamined. The contents of this study were as follows. First, the revolution of Donghak was an external reform. This reform was meant to reform the political and social contradictions of the late Joseon Dynasty at the time to open a world where everyone enjoys free and equal rights. To this end, they demanded changes and reforms in the political and social ruling system according to the logic of justice. In addition, it sought to establish the principle of fair economic distribution as a demand for change in the economic system. Second, the revolution of Donghak was an internal reform. The inner revolution was to reform oneself anew and return it to its original state. The original state means the true self that exists inside oneself. Therefore, the inner revolution refers to self-change, in other words, to realize and recover one’s true self by escaping from one’s ignorance. This is the teaching of Sicheonju, the enlightenment of Suun, and the meaning of Osimjeugyeosim(吾心卽汝心). The results of this study were as follows. We tried to see the revolution of Donghak mainly from the external aspect. And the meaning revealed in the external aspect was defined as the revolution of Donghak. However, the foundation of Donghak was an inner revolution. And it was the birth of a new human waiting for the true Donghak culture of the Gaebyeok again. The true meaning of revolution in Donghak was the act of constantly introspecting oneself personally and striving to have a mindset dreaming of happiness in a community while waiting for a new world to be newly implemented by new humans.

이 연구의 목적은 동학농민혁명에 내재한 동학의 사유 체계와 그 혁명성의 의미를 재해석하는 것이다. 이를 위해 기존 동학농민혁명의 의미를 밝히면서, 동시에 동학사상에 내재한 혁명성의 개념을 재정립한다. 이와 더불어 재정립된 동학의 혁명성 의미에 내포된 동학문화의 참된 가치와 그 영향을 재조명한다. 이 연구의 내용은 다음과 같았다. 첫째, 동학의 혁명성은 외면적인 개혁이었다. 이 개혁은 당시 후기 조선의 정치적 사회적 모순을 개혁하여 만인이 자유롭고 평등한 권리를 누리는 세상을 열고자 하는 의미였다. 이를 위해 공정(公正)의 논리에 따른 정치적 사회적 지배 체제의 변화와 개혁을 요구했다. 또한 경제적인 시스템의 변화 요구로 공평한 경제 분배의 원칙을 확립하고자 했다. 둘째, 동학의 혁명성은 내면적인 개혁이었다. 내면의 혁명이란 자기 자신을 새롭게 개혁하여 본래의 상태로 되돌리는 것이었다. 본래의 상태란 자기 내면에 존재하는 참된 자아를 뜻한다. 그래서 내면의 혁명은 무지한 자신의 상태에서 벗어나 본래의 참된 자아를 깨닫고 회복하는 것, 즉 자기 변화를 말했다. 이는 수운의 깨달음인 시천주(侍天主)의 가르침이며, 오심즉여심(吾心卽汝心)의 의미였다. 이 연구의 결과는 다음과 같았다. 우리는 동학의 혁명성을 주로 외면적인 측면에서 보고자 했다. 그리고 그 외면적인 측면에서 드러나는 의미를 동학의 혁명성으로 정의했다. 하지만 동학은 근본은 내면의 혁명이었다. 그리고 다시개벽이라는 진정한 동학의 문화를 기다리는 새로운 인간의 탄생이었다. 새로운 인간에 의해 새롭게 구현되는 새 세상을 기다리면서, 개인적으로 끊임없이 자기 자신을 성찰하고, 공동체 속에서 행복을 꿈꾸는 마음을 갖도록 노력하는 행위가 동학이 지닌 진정한 혁명성의 의미였다.
