In spite of overflowing or enthusiastic concerning on ‘discipleship’ in Korean Christianity, being disciple is still urgent task. Emphasizing the need to establish a subject as a disciple, it is necessary to focus on the trends in which humanities reconsider St. Augustine. By applying Michel Foucault’s comments on Augustine, Korean Christianity has to be interest in the issues as fallows; ‘the sage and the shepherd,’ ‘the sage and the disciples,’ and ‘the disciples and the shepherd.’ If we reconstruct his discipleship around Augustine’s Confession, we can see that Augustine, who was familiar with the stoic sage narratives, pursued to live as a disciple who follows Jesus narratives and imitates Christ. Using Foucault to pay attention to Augustine’s discipleship goes beyond the rediscovery of classics. In particular, it is possible to rediscover the values that Korean Christian should pursue. Korean Christianity has to protect the ‘pastoral power’ that may appear in the process of misinterpreting the discipleship as stoic ‘askesis,’ and practice ‘mimesis’ that imitates Jesus Christ as the discipleship shown by Augustine.

한국기독교에 ‘제자’에 대한 관심이 과잉일 정도로 넘쳐나고 제자훈 련에 가혹행위 의혹까지 불거지면서도 ‘제자됨’을 구현하지 못하는 이유는 무엇인가? ‘제자로서의 주체’ 확립이 절실하다는 점에서, 현대인문학자들이 아우구스티누스를 소환하는 현상에 착안할 필요가 있 다. 예를 들어, 푸코에게서 아우구스티누스는 자기배려적 주체를 저해 하는 사목권력의 장본인에 속한다. ‘현자와 목자’의 대립구도인 셈이 다. 하지만. 아우구스티누스가 현자에서 제자로 내러티브를 전환하여 제자됨을 추구하였고 성화에 힘썼다는 사실을 놓쳐서는 안 된다. 말하 자면, ‘현자와 제자’의 전환구도로 읽어야 한다. 이러한 논의를 응용하여, 한국기독교를 위한 과제를 ‘제자와 목자’ 의 구도에서 살펴볼 수 있다. 아우구스티누스는 스토아적 현자 내러티 브를 극복하고 예수 내러티브를 따라 회심하였으며, 회심 이후에는 그리스도를 본받는 제자로 살아내고자 했다. 이것은 한국기독교가 제 자도의 구현에서 놓치지 말아야 할 가치를 상기시켜준다. 제자도를 스토아적 ‘아스케시스’로 곡해하여 강도 높은 훈련과 자기성숙의 추구 로 와전시켜서는 안 된다. 또한 그 과정에서 나타날 수 있는 ‘사목권력 화’를 경계해야 한다. 나아가, 아우구스티누스의 제자도 이해에서 볼 수 있듯이 예수 그리스도를 본받는 ‘미메시스’를 구현해야 한다.
