The concept of Korean culture in Korean language teaching has heretofore been defined as a massive structure that can explain not only the products and behaviors of “Koreans” but also the value culture. However, this essential structure of positivism eliminates the liquidity and hybridity of culture, reduces individuals into representatives of national states, and above all, contains incompatible philosophical differences with interculturalism, which has recently been pursued. This made cultural teaching so far not without criticism that they are reproducing mutually exclusive group-cultural discourse. This study aimed to contend that a paradigm shift is necessary to overcome these limitations. To that end, it introduced the concept of culture as a “thick description” by anthropologist Geertz (1973) and emphasized that Korean language education research should approach culture as a web of significance shared intersubjectively interpretively. This interpretive cultural concept will provide an opportunity for researchers and teachers to see the learners’ process of reconstructing the meaning of Korean text based on transnational networks, situatedness, and otherness in their own lived experiences as cultural learning.

기존의 한국어 교육에서의 한국문화 개념은 ‘한국인들’의 산물, 행동뿐 아니라 가치 문화까지도 설명할 수 있는 거대한 구조로 정의되어 왔다. 그러나 실증주의 이런 본질 적 구조는 문화의 유동성, 혼종성을 소거하고, 개인을 민족국가의 대리인으로 환원시 키며, 무엇보다 최근 주목받는 상호문화주의와 양립할 수 없는 철학적 차이를 담지하 고 있다. 따라서 지금까지의 문화 교수는 상호배타적인 집단별 문화 담론을 재생산하 고 있다는 비판을 피해갈 수 없었던 것이다. 본 연구는 이런 한계들을 뛰어넘기 위해서 는 패러다임 전환이 필요함을 역설하고 있다. 구체적으로는 인류학자 Geertz(1973)의 ‘두꺼운 기술’로서의 문화 개념을 소개하고 한국어 교육 연구가 상호주관적으로 공유되 는 의미의 장으로서의 문화에 해석적으로 접근해야 함을 강조했다. 이 해석적 문화 개 념은 학습자가 자신의 체험된 경험 속 초국가적 네트워크, 상황성, 타자성을 바탕으로 한국어 텍스트의 의미를 해석, 재구성해가는 과정 자체를 문화 학습으로 볼 계기를 마 련해줄 것이다.
