This paper focuses on the 2nd leader of Donghak, Choi Sihyeong’s strives for theoretical success and expansion matching with institutional changes which were made by him. Donghak as the most famous and important religion in the 19th century in Joseon was trying to change and expand theoretically, especially in the era of Choi Sihyeong. We can see those changes and expansion in the history of almost every religion or dynasty, and Donghak was not an exception. For example, Choi Sihyeong insisted ‘Insicheon( : human is heavenly god)’ to explain his master also the founder of Donghak, Choi Jewu’s ‘Sicheonju( )’ and he claimed that ‘worship for yourself(向我設位).’ With many records of the institutional changes in Donghak, this paper demonstrates the theoretical expansions of Choi Sihyeong and its intellectual historical meaning.

한국 근대의 대표적 민족종교로서 동학은 여러 번 제도를 고치고 이론을 확장해가며 그 외연을 넓혔다. 이러한 제도의 개편과 이론적 확장은 특히 선 대의 가르침을 계승하여 교단을 확장해야 했던 2~3대 때 많이 발생하는데, 최 시형 시대의 동학도 마찬가지였다. 이 글은 바로 이 점에 주목하여 해월 최시 형이 일궈낸 동학의 이론적 계승과 확장을, 그의 시대 동학에서 확인되는 제 도 변화와의 상관관계 속에서 드러내고 그 사상사적 의미를 확인하고자 한다. 이 글이 특히 중점을 삼고 있는 것은 최시형 대에서 보이는 ‘한울’에서 ‘나’로의 주체의 전위, 나에서 모든 사람으로 그리고 만물로 포괄되는 과정 과 그 가운데에서 포착되는 ‘마음’의 강조이다. 이는 다시 향아설위, 인등 제로 정착하는 제례의 간소화와 내면화 과정, 그리고 육임제 임직 부여 과정 에서 최시형의 갈등 봉합 사례를 통해 확인된다.
