This study is focused on the background of emergence of the scholars of Gyeonggi province( ) during the late Joseon Period. The scholars of Gyeonggi province( ) had been grown amid the circumstances when the position of Gyeonggi region centering around Hanyang was promoted from political, military, and administrative aspects. Along with being promoted position from political, military, and administrative aspects, this region was urbanized rapidly, and separated into the capital and rural area( ⋅ 의 분리). Under these circumstances, the scholars of Gyeonggi province( ) were able to grow as the center of the academic world. King Jeongjo encouraged people to learn ZhuZiXue( ) as the Correct Learning, and recommended different interpretation from ZhuZiXue( ). Such a policy had occasioned to rejuvenate the academia. The scholar of Gyeonggi province( ) had been affected directly by such research policy of King Jeongjo. Some scholars had accepted the position on the revision and complement issue of Confucianism, and others attempted to come up with different interpretations from Confucianism. These tendencies were continued even after the death of King Jeongjo. It should be noted that the scholars of Gyeonggi province( ) had faithfully performed their given roles.

본 논문은 조선후기 경기학인( )이 등장하게 된 배경을 중심으로 논의를 전개하였다. 경기학인은 한양을 중심으로 하는 경기지역이 정치적⋅군사적⋅행 정적 지위가 높아지는 분위기 속에서 성장하였다. 정치적⋅군사적⋅행정적 지위 가 높아짐에 따라 이 지역은 급속히 도시화되고 경( )⋅향( )이 분리되게 된다. 이러한 분위기 속에서 경기학인들은 학계의 중심으로 성장하게 된다. 정조는 주자학을 정학( )으로 장려하기도 하였고, 주자학과는 다른 해석 을 권장하였다. 이러한 정책은 학계를 활발하게 만드는 계기가 되었다. 경기 학인은 정조의 이러한 학술정책에 직접적인 세례를 받았다. 경기학인 가운데 일부는 주자학을 수정⋅보완하는 입장을 수용하였고, 다른 일부는 주자학과 는 다른 해석을 시도하였다. 이러한 경향은 정조의 사후에도 계속되었다. 경 기학인은 자신들에게 부여된 역할을 충실히 수행한 것이다.
