Before the 2000s, the term ‘second generation Koreans’ was used a lot in the Korean American community. Beyond the 2000s, the term ‘next generation’ has replaced ‘second generation Koreans’. “Next generation” usually means “next generation”. However, the age group to which the term refers is too broad. This article is a record of a scholar who has lived in New York, USA for nearly 40 years, through his participation in observation of the ‘next generation’. Taking some recent newspaper articles related to 'next generation' as an example, I would like to think about the problems of discussions about 'next generation'. And I would like to try my own suggestions to solve those problems. In order to point out the problems of the discussion of ‘next generation’ in the Korean American community, first of all, I would like to examine the emergence of ‘next generation’ in terms of demographics and who they are. In addition, I would like to examine some of the problems I want to point out in the discussion of ‘next generation’. As for the problems of the 'next generation', I would like to focus on their identity problem, which is the most important problem, and look at other problems together. The suggestions presented by the author in this article are only an attempt. Nevertheless, these attempts are considered valuable because the development of the Korean American community can be expected through a correct understanding of the ‘next generation’.

재미 한인사회에서 2000년대 이전에는 ‘한인 2세’라는 말이 많이 사용되었다. 2000년대를 넘어서면서 ‘차세대(next generation)’란 용어가 ‘한인 2세’를 대체 해왔다. 보통 ‘차세대’는 ‘다음 세대’를 말한다. 그러나 그 용어가 지칭하는 연령 계 층이 너무 광범위하고 애매모호하다. 이 글은 미국의 뉴욕 현지에서 40년 가까이 살아온 한 학자의 ‘차세대’에 대한 참 여관찰을 통한 기록이다. ‘차세대’와 관련된 최근의 몇몇 신문기사를 사례로 하여 그동안 ‘차세대’에 관한 논의들의 문제점에 대해 생각해보고자 한다. 그리고 그 문 제점들의 해결을 위해 필자 나름대로의 제언을 시도해보고자 한다. 재미 한인사회에서 ‘차세대’ 논의의 문제점을 지적하기 위해 먼저 인구학적인 면 에서 ‘차세대’의 등장과 그들이 누구인지에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 그리고 ‘차세대’ 의 문제점들로는 가장 중요한 문제인 그들의 정체성 문제를 중점적으로 살펴보고 그 밖의 여러 문제를 뭉뚱그려 함께 살펴보고자 한다. 이 글에서 제시되는 필자의 제언은 하나의 시도일 뿐이다. 그럼에도 불구하고 이러한 시도가 가치 있다고 여겨지는 것은 ‘차세대’에 대한 올바른 이해를 통해 재미 한인사회의 미래와 발전을 기대해볼 수 있기 때문이다.
