This article uses Jung Eun-gwol’s romance novel 『The Lives of Sungkyunkwan Confusion’s Scholars』 as a case study to investigate the achievement of poetic effect of literary style. The article emphasizes the communication of poetic effect relating to the analysis of the function of literary translation, proposing that the affective and mental qualities of poetic effect of literary style in original literary text should be brought into the translated literary text. It insists that the main literary styles generally lead to the various kinds of poetic effects. One of the main literary styles of the novel is the idiomatic expressions. They are usually the source of poetic effects, in terms of their emotional and mental qualities. Therefore, this article investigated the translation of the idiomatic expressions in the translated novel in China, focusing on its poetic effects and comparing the original literary text and its translated literary text in China. The translated novel in China did not achieve, for the most part, the poetic effects expressed in the idiomatic expressions of original Korean literary text in terms of the subtle emotion and the deep meaning. This article emphasizes that in translating literary text, it is necessary to take heed of the poetic effect of literary style to present translated novel successfully to the reading public in the target culture.
