ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) is becoming a focal concept in recent business operations worldwide. Understanding how media has covered the ESG issue might suggest meaningful implications for communication professionals. Thus, we conducted a large-scale big-data analysis such as natural language processing and semantic network analysis to examine how news about ESG had been produced in Korea. We used ‘Big Kinds,’ a news big data analysis system operated by the Korea Press Foundation, to collect 55,562 articles from 54 media outlets from January 2019 to August 2022. The results showed that Tae-won Chey, the Chairman of SK Inc., was the most important news source regarding ESG news. Also, the main topics identified through the analysis were environmentally friendly, governance, companies, COVID-19, sustainability, and competitive advantage. Through our study, we suggest that communication professionals should help organizations effectively respond to meet the growing ESG expectations of stakeholders.

최근 환경, 사회, 지배구조를 뜻하는 ESG가 전 세계적으로 중요한 경영 이슈로 논의되고 있다. 본 연구는 미디어에 보도되는 ESG이슈에 대한 심층적인 이해를 위해 지난 4년간 국내 ESG 관련 기사를 빅카인즈에서 수집하여 빅데이터 분석을 실시했다. 2019년 1월부 터 2022년 8월까지 54개 매체에 보도된 기사 55,562건을 분석한 결과 ESG 이슈 보도는 주로 경제면 중심으로 이루어졌음을 확인할 수 있었다. SK그룹의 최태원 회장이 주요 정보원으로 확인되었고, 친환경, 지배구조, 기업, 코로나19, 지속가능, 경쟁력 등이 주요 주제어로 나타났다. ESG 경영이 날로 중요해지는 국내외 상황을 볼 때 PR실무자들은 기업의 ESG 노력을 다양한 이해관계자들과 적극적으로 커뮤니케이션해야 할 것이다.
