In 1884, G.C.Foulk conducted two rounds of investigations into the southern part of Joseon to collect information on Joseon as a naval officer at the US Embassy in Joseon. To this end, we collected and organized related public documents such as the official diplomatic document between the U.S. legation and the foreign affairs office, the Johoe(照会), the official documents, Hojo(護照) issued by the Tongri Negotiation and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and the Janggye(狀啓), which reported the contents of the fork visits from local government officials. We organized the data on the contents of borrowing travel expenses from local government agencies and returning them. In particular, the regions that borrowed travel expenses were Chungcheong Gamyeong (Gongju), Jeolla Gamyeong (Jeonju), Najumok, Jinjumok, and Chungjumok. In addition, the evaluation records of officials in Jeolla-do left by Polk among the surveyed areas and the evaluation data of the Joseon side of the officials remaining in Jeonlagamsagyelog(『全羅監司啓錄』) were compared and reviewed to examine the characteristics of each data and complementary points. Through this, it was confirmed that many of the same evaluation items exist. However, in the case of some subjects, conflicting evaluations were found. Such a difference may be the result of a difference in the method of grasping the individual propensities of the fork or the difference in the evaluation method of the Joseon side. Meanwhile, the Yongan area in Jeolla Province, which Polk selected as a special investigation area, was the area where the US warship Allat ran aground in the Geum River around the middle of 1884, and the case for assistance in this case and the data on the related person, Yongan Hyungam Kim No-wan, were supplemented. On the other hand, he conducted a review of the data on the Naju area waterway survey for the wheeled ship operation survey and the Yeongshin Station, a related accommodation facility, and confirmed the contents by comparing the substance with specific data. In particular, it is noteworthy that in order to understand the reality of the function of the inland waterway function of the Yeongsan River in Naju, the difference between the water depth and tidal flow of each ferry was investigated to confirm the difference from the records of the Joseon dynasty, and the impossibility of the operation of the wheeled ship is noteworthy.

포크는 조선주재 미국공사관 해군무관으로서 조선에 대한 정보 수집을 위 해 실시한 조선 조사 작업을 2차에 걸쳐 진행하였다. 이를 위해 미국공사관 과 외부아문과 오간 공식 외교 문서인 照會, 통리교섭통사사무아문에서 발행 한 護照 및 지방관아에서 포크방문 내용을 보고한 狀啓 등 관련 공문서를 수 집 정리하여 당시 정황과 문서 행정 특히, 여행경비를 지방관아에서 빌려주 고 이를 반환하는 내용 등에 대한 자료 정리를 진행하였다. 특히, 여행경비를 차용한 지역이 충청감영(공주),전라감영(전주),나주목, 진주목, 충주목으로 監 營과 牧에 해당하는 관아에서 이 같은 공금 차용이 진행되었음을 보여준다. 또한 조사 지역 중 포크가 남긴 전라도 지역의 관리들에 대한 평가기록과 『全羅監司啓錄』 등에 남은 해당 관리에 대한 조선 측 평가 자료를 비교 검토 하여 각 자료의 특성과 상호 보완사항을 함께 검토하였다. 이를 통해 동일한 평가사항이 상당수 존재함을 확인할 수 있었다. 다만 일부 대상장의 경우 상 반된 평가사항을 발견할 수 있었다. 이 같은 차이는 포크의 개인적 성향 파 악방식의 차이이거나 조선측 평가방식의 차이에 따른 결과일 수 있다. 한편, 포크가 특별히 조사지역으로 선택한 전라도 용안지역은 1884년 중반경 미국 군함 앨럿호의 금강 좌초사건 지역으로 이에 대한 도움에 대한 사례 및 관련 인물인 용안현감 김노완에 대한 자료 보완을 진행하였다. 한편, 화륜선 운항 조사를 위한 나주지역 수로조사, 관련 숙박시설인 영신역원에 대한 자료들에 대한 검토를 진행하여 그 실체와 구체적 자료들과의 비교 통한 내용 확인을 진행하였다. 특히, 나주 영산강의 내륙 수로 기능의 실체를 파악하기 위해 각 나루터의 수심과 조수 간만의차 등을 조사해 조선측 기록과의 차이를 확인할 수 있었으며 화륜선 운항의 불가성 등을 확인한 점이 주목된다.
