In this paper, we reviewed the birth and spread of Korean web musicals, as well as the recent new trends of Korean web musicals, and discussed the possibility of developing Korean web musicals. Korea's first web musical is presumed to be High School Jam directed by Shinhyuk Lee, released in 2010. High School Jam is a short web musical that humorously expresses the psychology of Korean high school students who are oppressed by college entrance exams, which has caused a great sensation among web users. Afterwards, director Lee experimented with various web musical formats, and in 2018 formed a team called “Tikitik” to professionally produce short web musicals, establishing his own web musical style. Meanwhile, as the demand for web content surged due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of groups producing web musicals increased, and accordingly the trend of web musicals also diversified. In particular, after the release of A Killer Party, Korean web musicals are shifting from music-oriented shorts to drama-oriented series. It is expected that Korean web musical will be able to develop into competitive web content if the scope of materials is expanded, identity is established, and distribution structure is improved.

본 논문에서는 한국 웹뮤지컬의 탄생과 확산, 그리고 최근에 나타난 한국 웹뮤지컬의 새로운 경향들을 검토하고 한국 웹뮤지컬의 발전 가능성에 대해 논했다. 한국 최초의 웹뮤지컬은 2010년에 공개된 이신혁 감독의 <하이스쿨 잼>으로 추정된다. <하이스쿨 잼>은 대학입시에 억눌린 한국 고등학생들의 심리를 유머러스하게 표현 한 단편 웹뮤지컬로, 웹 사용자들 사이에서 큰 반향을 불러일으켰다. 이후 이신혁 감독은 다양한 웹뮤지컬 형식을 실험하다가, 2018년에 ‘티키틱’이라는 팀을 결성해 단편 웹뮤지컬을 전문적으로 제작하면서 자신만의 웹뮤지컬 스 타일을 확립했다. 한편, 코로나19 대유행으로 인해 웹콘텐츠에 대한 수요가 급증하면서 웹뮤지컬을 제작하는 단체 들이 증가했고, 그에 따라 웹뮤지컬의 경향도 다양해졌다. 특히, <킬러파티> 공개 이후 한국 웹뮤지컬은 음악 중 심 단편물에서 드라마 중심 시리즈물로 이행하고 있다. 소재의 범위를 넓히고 독자성을 확립하고 유통 구조를 개 선한다면 한국 웹뮤지컬이 경쟁력 있는 웹콘텐츠로 발전할 수 있을 것으로 예상된다.
