This paper began with questions about what the church should be, how the relationship between the church and society should be established, what the Korean church should look like now, and how the Church of God should respond to the challenges of society and history. Unfortunately, the Korean church today is gradually losing trust from society. In order to overcome this problem, the church will have to restore its original shape and responsibility above all else. In my thesis, I mentioned the relationship between the church and society, and then, through biblical and historical examples, what role and responsibility the church should fulfill in its relationship with society. In this process, evangelism and social participation of the church cannot be separated and the two need to take place at the same time when the church exists and works in the world. In particular, the researcher attempted to search the meaning and role of practical theology for the church's social participation and action. Practical theology can be understood and interpreted in various ways, but practical theology is basically a practical study of the church. It was explained that an integrated practice-paradigm that encompasses the the social reform practice-paradigm and the emancipatory practice-paradigm, and furthermore the recent individual practice-paradigm is needed for the Korean church today. Also, as a practical suggestion for the Korean church, I mentioned theconcrete and practical project of developing a 'Christian mind', restoring a 'community spirit of empathy and compliment,' and forming a 'school of love and justice' in the Korean church. I concluded emphasizing that the Korean church must fulfill its responsibilities for the work of the kingdom of God in a changing and challenging society and history.

본고는 교회가 무엇이어야 하는지, 교회와 사회의 관계는 어떻게 설정되어야 하는 지, 지금 한국교회는 어떤 모습으로 존재하고, 하나님의 교회는 어떻게 사회와 역사의 도전 앞에 응답해야하는지에 대한 물음을 가지고 시작되었다. 아쉽게도 오늘날 한국 교회는 사회로부터 점점 신뢰를 잃어가고 있다. 이 문제를 극복하기 위해서 교회는 무엇보다 교회 본연의 모습과 책무를 회복해야 할 것이다. 필자는 논문에서 교회와 사회의 상관성 관계를 언급하였고, 이어서 성서적이고 역사적인 사례를 통해서 교회 가 사회와의 관계에서 어떤 역할과 책임을 다해야 하는지 설명하였다. 교회의 사회참 여와 행동을 위한 성서적 근거로 하나님, 인간, 그리스도, 구원, 교회의 교리에 대한 정확하고 깊은 이해가 필요함을 강조하였다. 역사적 사례로는 존 웨슬리와 찰스 피니 의 복음주의 부흥운동이 어떻게 사회개혁의 현상으로 연계되었는지 소개하였다. 그 결과 교회의 복음전도와 사회참여는 동전의 양면처럼 분리될 수 없는 모습으로 함께 공존하며 나아가야 함을 강조하였다. 특별히 교회의 사회 참여와 행동을 위해서 실천신학의 의미와 역할을 조명하였는데, 실천신학이 여러 갈래로 이해되고 해석되어질 수 있으나, 기본적으로 실천신학은 교회의 실천적 학문으로 목회자의 실천 패러다임, 교회의 실천 패러다임, 사회의 개혁 적 해방적 실천 패러다임, 더 나아가 최근의 개인의 실천 패러다임을 하나로 아우르 는 통합적 실천 패러다임이 오늘 한국교회를 위해 필요하다는 점을 설명하였다. 이후 한국교회를 위한 실천적 제언으로서 ‘기독교 지성’의 계발, ‘공감과 감동의 공동체’ 회 복, 그리고 ‘사랑과 정의의 학교’ 구성의 필요성을 언급하면서, 한국교회는 비록 세상 과 사회가 한층 세속화되어가고, 불평등과 불의가 번영의 미명하에 만연해져도, 하나 님나라 사역의 완성을 위해 맡겨진 사역의 소명과 책무를 다해야 함을 역설하였다.
